[opensuse] Media Center idea/help!
Guys, Couple of questions. First, does anybody know what file access protocol is used by TV's etc to access media files on networked computers similar to Samsung's "All-share" on windows? I'm sure it's something related to smb, but haven't tcpdumped it yet to dissect it. I have an old box that is currently dual boot that I have connected to the TV via a wireless link. In win, the TV can browse the pc just fine with the help of the win application "all-share". I would like to get the TV to access the opensuse side of the box. Any ideas what's involved? Second, I want to create a wireless bridge from the media cabinet to my normal wireless AP so that I can use the 4 wired lan ports on the back of the bridge to connect blu-ray players, etc. that don't do well with USB wireless. (Sony crap, etc...) I have a Linksys wrt-54g as my normal AP, haven't flashed with dd-wrt yet, but was going to try and use the native firmware if possible. I have a couple of spare trendnet wi-fi routers that I was wanting to use as the bride connection to the AP, but I'm having a bit of trouble getting the trendnet to connect to the Linksys as a normal wireless client so that the wired ports can function as a hub for the media cabinet. Anybody done this? I see the trendnet will function in WDS mode (basically as a repeater for the original AP), but the Linksys doesn't seem to have that functionality with the native firmware. dd-wrt seems to offer that for the Linksys. Is that the only way to go? The other option would be to completely replace the Linksys. I have a couple of trendnets (633gr and 639gr). However, if I can make this work with the original Linksys AP and one of the Trendnet boxes, that would be my preference. What says the brain trust on both issues? -- David C. Are you talking about DLNA David? http://www.dlna.org/digital_living/how_it_works/ This is being baked into lots of TVs (targets), and DVD Players, BluRay (sources), Windows, Android (sources as well as targets). -- _____________________________________ ---This space for rent--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Googling shows All Share is simply Samsung's name for DLNA. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5vie0bFRao Windows Media Center supports it in either target or source role, and this page has some links to Linux packages: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Living_Network_Alliance Various Android devices have both target and source apps available. (You probably want 802.11n for this). My android tablet can browse and play videos, music and pictures on my network with software (clear.fi) that came on the tablet. Any modern TV has this build in for the last few years. -- _____________________________________ ---This space for rent--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yes, DLNA - my new Panasonic TV and Blu-Ray/DVD player have it. MediaTomb speaks DLNA (or rather, the TV happily speaks to MediaTomb running on my oS 11.4 box and on my PopcornHour A-110 media box, which is almost redundant now). The only problem is that MediaTomb's default way of presenting folders and files is ugly. Although it parses nested folders, it presents them in a flat arrangement, destroying any hierarchy that may have existed in the original directory structure (note - it doesn't actually alter the structure, it's just the way it presents the data). No doubt, since I'm pretty sure it uses xml to define its schema, it should be possible to fix with a bit of hacking, but I have neither the time nor the inclination to learn how to do that right now. So, I'll put up with it. At least my TV can stream media (at least in the formats it supports, which is somewhat limited) from my oS "server". -- =================================================== Rodney Baker VK5ZTV rodney.baker@iinet.net.au =================================================== -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I was right. See http://mediatomb.cc/pages/scripting for more details on customization.
