Hi Richard, Thanks for this. The reason why I knocked up a script was because I did not think that these various installation utilities could reliably resolve dependancies. In other words they would effect the installation of multiple RPMs using "rpm -i --nodeps xxx", there being a tacit assumption that the set of rpms is such as to satisfy all dependancies. Is this not so? Hence by the use of a script I can easilly see whether there have been any problems. Kind regards, Simon Richard Bos wrote:

with regards to retrieving the required rpms, you could use 1 single command: apt-get install gnome2.
This will retrieve 30+ rpms, so there is no need for a script (of course you need to have apt installed). APT is a general package installer very well replacing YOU. After installing the gnome2 rpms, apt will monitor the rpm server and will notify you if there updated packages :)
