Re: [opensuse] How to upgrade my kernel?
Because I respect David's advice, and I've used zypper up in the past for routine upgrades of installed software. However, following my last post, I did fire up Yast, and sure enough, there were the kernel upgrades waiting for me. I installed them... Unfortunately, on rebooting the nvidia drivers (260.19.12) won't work with the new kernel, and the machine just boots to the command line, so I'm no better off. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you downloaded the NVidia driver you only need to rerun from the CLI. For example, as root run ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.12.run (or the package you used to install previously). You'll need to run 'init 3' first. If you want NVIDIA driver to be used for a number of kernels, install it once and then for additional kernel use ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.12.run -K - it will add driver module for this kernel and will not mess with X. Also, instead of init 3 you can just type 3 in boot options (on the boot-up screen). -- Mark Goldstein -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

good point you brought up here. i don't know if they changed it in the release version but the latest version of the nvidia driver installer wasn't working with 2.6.36 and i had to extract it and edit(comment out) this one line of code about ioctls to get it to work. hopefully nvidia has come out with a new version.

Hi Suggest you have a read here; http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Mailing_list_netiquette
thank you for your suggestion now i understand the rules. but i'd also like to remind everyone of the first point that is listed in that link: "It is pointless to post an email that only warns about posting style. New openSUSE email users will feel unwanted and go away, and that is exactly what we don't want. If you don't want to read an email, then just skip it. If you want to answer, but prefer the posting style described below, state that at the end and link to this article for explanation." and also the person that started all this told me not to ever top-post but that link says : "General rule is, if the message is the natural conclusion of a thread, and there no more replies are expected, then top posting is adequate......" didn't know of all this netiquete but i do now. but for the next time if you don't like the way an email is written,punctuated,spelled,etc.... there is no need to make a big deal out of it and send a mail just for that reason save yourself and other people time/inbox space and skip that message/email.

I dont know what it is with certain people that dont want to conform to convention and attempt to force windblows esq top posting on a list that is clearly not figured that way i just wish some people would GROW UP and get with the fact this list is NOT A TOP POST LIST what is so darn difficult, It is arrogant statements such as "but if you are an admin or something like that i'll be gland to comply " that fuel the problem . ^^^^^^ althou quite what a gland has to do with it i fail to see Get with the list do not top post on here simples *** Pete -- Powered by openSUSE 11.3 (x86_64) Kernel: 2.6.34.7-0.5-desktop KDE Development Platform: 4.4.4 (KDE 4.4.4) "release 3" 08:15 up 4 days 23:40, 4 users, load average: 0.30, 0.19, 0.11 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
