[opensuse] OpenSuSE 11.2 and VMWare
Hi, I know that OpenSUSE 11.2 will only be available in 1 hour, but prior to any distribution upgrade I need to know whether some of you have tested VMWare Workstation 6.02 on 11.2 during RC testing or using the GM build. It is mandatory for me to run the virtual machine under VMWare 6.02, and I won't upgrade to 11.2 (from 10.3) unless I am sure that it will run OK. If you know that it works under 11.1, I may chose to upgrade to 11.1 instead, since 10.3 is starting to get old... and I think I will love to use a better package management... Thank you for your input Have a nice day Matthias...waiting to dl 11.2 ;-) -- / \ /_!_\ My e-mail address has just changed. I think it will not work, because VMware 6.0.x cannot be compiled on new kernels AFAIK. But VMware 7.0 should work. (maybe some late update for VMware 6 may work too) -- -Alexey Eromenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

1. I'm running vmware workstation 6.5.3 under opensuse 11.1 without problems. I just got wmware workstation 7.0 and I have not been able to install it under opensuse 11.1 2. Vmware 6.5.3 Host opensuse 11.1 Guest opensuse 11.2 RC2 install ok including tools. 3. I have not tried to install vmware workstation under RC2 host so this does not answer your question :( 3. This weekend I will install opensuse 11.2 and see what happens with vmware 7.0. I will post it. -=terry=- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I can almost guarantee a NO on this one: even VMWare Workstation 6.5 has issue with compiling the kernel modules due to too many changes. VMware 7 works flawless in this regard. For 6.5 at least you can find patches on the VMware forum; I'm not sure if anything for 6.0 is available there. either way: your best approach to get this to work is having a discussion with VMware for such a case. Yesterday I tested VMplayer over RC2: it compiles and runs fine, but I wasn't able to install 11.1 beacause YaST can't accés /dev/sr0 :-( Some days ago I tested VMware-server 2.0.2 over Ubuntu Karmic: everything is fine here (see: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-vmware-server-2-0-x-in-ubuntu-9-10-...) Tonigth or may be next weekend I plan to test VMware-server 1.0.10 over 11.2 final (and decide then if I stay with openSUSE for my server or if I go with Ubuntu instead). So you decision is based on: vmware server 2.0.2 works on karmic vmware server 1.0.10 does not work on openSUSE -> you change to karmic? Sounds rather unfair and I can already predict the result of that very test. i'd advise you to also use vmware server 2.0.2 on openSUSE 11.2. Of course, it was the "short version", but there is a long one too :-) It's vital for me keep linux-abi (http://sourceforge.net/projects/linux-abi) running on my server, wich means I need something with kernel <= 2.6.28 running "forever". IMHO, the best approach here is to virtualize "something with kernel <= 2.6.28", avoiding to re-setup it every few months. Beacause actually 11.2RC2 is not able to run vmware and karmic is, I'm waiting for 11.2 final before to take my decission (wich seems to me fair enough). I like more vmware-server 1.0.x interface, but I'm considering other options, like 2.0.x version as well VirtualBox or KVM... Finally, with similar performance/reliability, I will go with Ubuntu beacause its LTS. Cheers. Thank you Alexei, Terry, Dominique & Miquel for sharing your knowledge/experience. I will stick to 10.3 a little bit further, waiting to be sure that it will work, or waiting to find an alternative (VMWare Workstation 7.0 or Virtual box). Cheers Matthias
