As an act of desperation, at the end of what few wits I may have had when this problem started, I ripped out my v7.1 and installed on a newly formatted partition. I'm still having this problem and really need help. Thanks in advance.

Subject: [SLE] Problem with pppd X-RCPT-TO: An immediately fatal error of some kind occurred.' /var/log/messages has couldn't set tty to ppp discipline.' What I'm missing is a mystery to me.
I would appreciate a solution, or where to look to find an understandable solution.
Thanks in advance.

I did a search on google for the error message you get and the recurring
answer I see there that the problem is that the ppp_async module is not
loaded. Try to insmod ppp_async and see if it helps.
