[opensuse] How does one encode CDs to mp3 format?
Hello, I have a previous post about grip which is not supported. It used an mp3 encoder, I think the mp3 package was lame. None of these files appear in openSuse. I was able to get grip from an online source, but it does not function correctly. No playback, and no ripping with an "invalid rip executable" message, even though I think I have chosen the internal one. Is there a application that will generate mp3 files as I used to? K3b generated .ogg files. Can .ogg files be used interchangeably with mp3 formates files? In your first post you said "I was hopping for suggestions on ripping tools that can be initiated from the command line." but all the subsequent discussion seems to have been about GUI tools. Morituri rip is a command line tool which defaults to flac, (a higher quality format than mp3), but it can also rip to mp3, alac, wav, wavpack, mp3vbr and vorbis. It aims for quality over speed. It uses the MusicBrainz server to get CD information, and Accurip to check the quality of the rip. It also writes an extra folder containing *.log, *.cue and *.m3u files which I don't need, so I run it from a python script which deletes these after ripping is complete. Just a happy user. You need to play around with it before rushing to post. K3B will rip to any format for which you have plug ins installed. -- After all is said and done, more is said than done.

Thanks. It took me awhile to find the codecs, in the Unofficial guide to openSuse Leap 42.1. Don -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Where do you get the plug-ins? I'd like to be able to create CDs that will play on a regular hi-fi CD player. --doug -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I just go into Yast key in k3b and click search. Make sure you have the Packman repository checked. Check each thing In the Plugins tab of K3e Configuration. Step to Programs in the K3B config. (You only need the upper one of each group, so for cdrdao you only need check /usr/bin/cdrdao, NOT /usr/bin/X11/cdrdao If you want full capabilities, make sure one of each is found. For instance I wanted to stall "normalize" I Open Yast in another window, search and install normalize click back to k3B, click refresh, rinse and repeat.

Isn't that what you started with? Actual CDs? Some hi-fis (and most car systems) will play mp3 CDs. (Just drag them all to a directory with Dolphin and use K3b to burn that directory to a CD). If your hi-fi won't play Mp3s, just copy the files off of music CDs with Dolphin (They are .wav files) and drop them into a directory in the order you want, and burn that with k3b. While you are doing that you will notice that notice that Dolphin shows you the CD contents in many different formats, most of which it creates for you on the fly. An audio CD only really contains .wav files. -- After all is said and done, more is said than done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

No, I'm starting with raw audio on cassette tape. --doug

Doug, with all due respect, you need to learn how to ask a question without hiding half the information. Stereo or mono? You don't have a CD creation problem. You have an analog tape input and recording problem. You need to find a way to feed from cassette to your line-in inputs on the computer (if available) and record those as wav files. There are a whole lot of computers that don't even have Line-in these days. You might need on old school sound card or something. Then do as I mentioned above to get those to CD. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

this is the most important thing. Also, in yast, check that you use the software version from packman ("version" tab in the software description). other version can't write mp3s.

from your answer (tape), I guess you don't want to *rip* cd (that is extract audio already on cd to mp3 files), but *burn* cd from mp3 to audio cd. double check that k3b is fro: packman, if not change version, then open k3b project audiocd you can also make things better installing the original "cdrecord" from software.opensuse.org but for audio cd I think it's not mandatory if you don't have yet the mp3, buy an usb writer tape reader, there are many cheap ones jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

by the way, you can also use this one as command line, but the syntax is a bit weird jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I went to the "Official guide to openSuse Leap 42.1", section 13, which is multimedia codecs, and chose the installation with one click option. Somehow, either with these codecs or installation of grip, I corrupted something. Now when I run k3b I receive an error message that states "System locale charset is ANSI_X3.4-1968" which it claims "is highly unlikely that this has been done intentionally." Can anybody suggest which file this decision is maintained in, and what it should be for USA? I assume 8 bit. ANSI_X3.4-1968 is ASCII.

I would expect "en_US.utf8". I'm not sure where it is set, but you can probably change it with YaST. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (5.1°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - virtual servers, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but I have used SoundKonverter to any reasonable sense of satisfaction. The author also responds quickly on (I think) Github. One thing to be aware of is that if you select "Use Windows-safe filenames" then you won't be able to use [] characters in your filename patterns. It was a mistake in the program, sweety. I knew [] were safe in Win file names, which is why I was so disgruntled to see my [] converted to () all the time and I couldn't find out why. Until the author pointed me to that option.

Yarr. You're cool.
