Sound settings wont stick
I have SuSE9.1 PRO. I keep losing my sound settings.. I can go into Yast and set up the Yamaha YMF724F sound card and it works fine until I have to restart then all the settings go away. Only the ext Source Playback sliders remain on the Kamix window. The main volume slider goes away, also. Does anyone know the finger magic required to make it stay around after a reboot? TIA, Richard

Have you tried KDE Control Center -> Sound & Multimedia -> Mixer, and click "Save Current Volumes"? This was what helped fix my problem with the DAC and ADC levels being biased completely to the right! You could try adjusting the volume setting in Yast. Eddie

I did that each time I had to redo the sound card with Yast to get it back to working. First I would delete whatever sound card was displaying then add a sound card which always came up to be the correct Yamaha, then setup the volumes and so long as I didn't restart my machine the sound would work normally. As soon as it was restarted the good sound card settings went away as described earlier. It may be fixed now since I did a big online update today. Even though I hate to do so, I guess I should do another restart to see if it stays working. Richard

This helped me with the same problem. http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/05/thallma_91_sndsilence.html Mike- -- If you're not confused, you're not trying hard enough. -- Please note - Due to the intense volume of spam, we have installed site-wide spam filters at catherders.com. Richard, I'm thinking you missed a step somewhere, because the above instructions worked for me. I have rebooted KDE, even rebooted the machine to test and things seem to have settled back down for sound settings. The instructions are somewhat confusing though, so I had to experiment a few times to get it right. This is what I did though: 1. Remove kdemultimedia3-mixer (this has kmix and causes KDE to rewrite the default sound settings each time you start KDE) 2. Quit kamix (answer Yes to restart with KDE) 3. open a shell/konsole 4. su to root, password 5. rcalsasound stop 6. rm /etc/asound.state 7. rcalsasound start 8. alsactl store (this recreates the asound.state file) 9. Start kamix from the menu>Multimedia>Volume Control 10. Now set your volumes I think that is all, as I tried many different things and am going from memory.
