Hi I have succesfull backup server with SuSE 9.0 in my LAN-system, where we have Linux, Win-98 and XP workstations. The thing that bothers me, is that XP keeps creating a strange file in the D:-drive. The file-name is tilde (~). I have means of deleting this file, so it does not create any more problems with Linux. But does anyone know why XP keeps creating this file, and it does have all the e--mail addresses from Outlook express. User has succesfully deleted the messenger, so that is not the source of this.. Sorry to ask OT question here, but I have not found any answers anywhere. Jaska.

HA! HA, HA! (big laugh) X'-) My guess is that you have just found one of those outlook virus/worms. Do your self a favour, get rid of Outlook, and get instead a good mail program worth of that name. Even better, use Linux. If you want to use Xp again, you will need to give your system a good clean out - meaning an up to date antivirus. Sorry! X'-) -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
Hi I was also suspecting something like that, but didn't told my spouse that yet... It is good to know, now there is one more nail in the coffing of M$ again! I just wish she switched over to Linux totally.. She has a dual-boot with SuSE 9.0, but that version seems to be a little unstable / weird in some areas.. Thanks for the information! Jaska. Carlos E. Mind you, I can not certify it, but it certainly looks like that. An address book which is not on the user own directory (somewhere under /win.../profile/username/), and simply named "~", smells of one of those viruses out there that are designed to exploit a hole in Outlook and get sent to everybody on the address book.

At least, she could use Netscape or Mozilla, or Eudora, for the mail. Anything but Outlook, that is like a kitchen strainer (holes, you know) - unfortunate, because the program is certainly good looking. There is a new virus out there, with a subject line of "Hi": the radio said that today it has infected around 30000 computers in Spain alone. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

That is just what it is: a backup of the addressbook of OE. Filename should have extension something like .wa~. Everytime there is a change in the addressbook (quite often if you have automatic adding of received address in addressbook set), this file will be made. Since june 2003 or so there has been a patch for oe that has caused this behaviour, and ms did not have the time yet to correct this faulty patch :-) Search google for "tilde".
