SuSE 8.2 nicely sets up the shmfs file system, shows up in the mount list as both tmpfs and shmfs, but it never seems to get used. Checking the shm docs in the linux/Documentation directory gave the impression that I need to specifically mount the /tmp directory there, searches on Google suggest pointing the environment variable TMPDIR at /dev/shmfs is enough. Using TMPDIR persuades acroread to store its files there, but no other application seems to pay any heed to it. What is the correct way to get the system to use the shmfs/tmpfs setup? I have the following entry in my /etc/fstab: tmpfs /tmp tmpfs \ rw,size=128m,mode=1777 0 0 (line wrapped for e-mail) This works for me, /tmp normally has pg-IYQVsa/ kde-markea/ ksocket-markea/ mcop-markea/ plus whatever transient files I create as I work. Great, I'll give it a try, if it works for you, it'll (should) work for me :) Thanks jalal -- GPG fingerprint = 3D45 5509 D380 26A4 523E A9D8 A66A 5F38 CA43 BB0E

There is another use of tmpfs I found very useful. To store web applications' cgi/fcgi scripts and small apps. icon files. Since they red and executed right from the RAM, web applications speed has been improved considerably. Just my 0.02 Alex ------------------- the there,
