[opensuse] opensuse 10.3 box vs iso versions
I have just installed opensuse 10.3 86_64 using the iso version. I also ordered the box version from Novell which it has not arrived yet. Q: is there any difference between the iso image and the dvd from the box? Q: is it worth to reinstall it when the box version arrives? Q: if there is a difference what repositories I have to add to be the same Q: registering the code with novell what gives me besides the online/phone support Some of the answers may seems obvious but.... website DVD-iso image contains 4.3GB softwares for 32/64 bit systems. boxed version contains 1 dual-layer DVD for x86 system and 1 dual-layer DVD for 64bit system - 16 GB software and printed manuals. It also comes with 90-day installation support by phone and e-mail.

After reading the above answer, it's you decision. My opinion 'No', just add the DVD as source repository and install other packages from there.
Q: if there is a difference what repositories I have to add to be the same
I think so.
Q: registering the code with novell what gives me besides the online/phone support
Boxed version comes with 90-day installation support by phone and e-mail. You may extend it after purchase support.

This is not correct. I've opened the box and had a look on the DVDs. DVD 1 is the installation source for both 32 and 64 bit, so in sum both single layer installation DVDs on one double layer i think. On the second DVD (also double layer) is additional software and i will have a look what's the difference. I have seen java6 for example. The complete capacity of both is round about 13.4GB. Dunno if SuSE works the same way that RedHat did, but if it does, I'd advise folks not to "register" unless and until they actually do need some help. I bought a commercial RedHat distribution once, somewhere around v7.1 if I recall correctly, because it had been a while since I'd run a Linux system, and it was my first experience with RedHat. I figured I might need the help, and was happy to pay extra for it. I duly followed their recommendation to register the product as soon as it was installed. As it turned out, I was able to answer all my own questions for quite a while, digging information out of man pages, Linux books, and other available resources. When I was finally stumped, and had tried for days to resolve a problem, I contacted them and was told that my support had run out, because I'd bought the distribution slightly more than 90 days before. That was the end of my first and last association with RedHat Linux. I've always figured that 90 days of paid support ought to extend for 90 days after your first support contact, but that's not the way RedHat saw it. If SuSE feels the same way, then my above advice stands: don't sign up until you need help. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

But you're aware that support for installation only is included? If you call with a problem two months after installation I doubt it will be answered. Bye, Steve -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
In my experiance as long as I'm within the 90 days, SUSE's (great, BTW) support people help me with my problem, even on the installed desktop. On Wed, 2007-10-10 at 10:21 +0200, Stephan Binner wrote:

More files on the dvd, no need to download so many things. Sometimes they include commercial software, I don't know about 10.3. They should publish the advantages, its to their own benefit.
Q: is it worth to reinstall it when the box version arrives?
No.

oss and non-oss.

Printed manuals - unfortunately, not the big administration book: I stopped buying the box the moment they stopped printing it. I agree with Jerry: don't register till you really need support. Also with Stephan: it's only installation support, and of a "standard" installation. Chances are, if you have a problem and you are not a newbie, that the support will be useless. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
