[SLE] Pac Bell and Westech DSL modem problem solved...
Greetings! I finally got my DSL modem to work correctly, even across the hub with PPPOE. I did following since a lot of the frustrations that I was having with the DSL modem was similar to the frustration that I had with the analog modem when using it with Linux for the first time, and the solutions between the two different modem types nearly identical. (I'm currently using SuSE 6.3.) 1. Deleted the /etc/ppp folder, and all traces of pppoe and adsl-* files. 2. Compiled and installed the latest versions of pppd. (This may not have been needed but I wanted to be sure that it was a problem.) 3. Did a forced install of rp-pppoe-1.8-1.i386.rpm. 4. Connected the Westech DSL modem directly to my network. 5. Ran 'ifconfig eth0 0.0.0.0 up' to clear the previous settings. 6. Ran 'adsl-setup' and answered all the questions. 7. Ran 'adsl-start' and got "TIMED OUT" after 60 seconds. At this point, I kept changing the /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf and /etc/ppp/pap-secrets files since I suspected that something wasn't quite right and making a broad assumption that everything else is correct as it should be. Contrary to what I read elsewhere, the pap-secrets file had this format: username * password You don't need have @pacbell.net at the end of the user name. Once I dropped @pacbell.net from both pppoe.conf and pap-secrets files, my DSL connection came up in one second. I put the DSL modem back on the hub and ran 'ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.1 up' to resume my normal ip address on that NIC. (The pppoe.conf file will use "eth0" to find the modem on the hub.) The adsl-start script had no problems with the DSL modem over the hub. Right now, my system is unreasonably unsecured since a hub is not the best place to put the DSL modem. Next week, I will be building a dedicated firewall box around a old P100 system using two NICs and Coyote Linux. Thanks for everyone's input!
