In a new install of 8.2, I am trying to modify LILO so that the splash screen displays windows_2k and SuSE_Linux_8_2 instead of windows and linux. When I run /sbin/lilo I get the following error which seems rather odd: "Fatal: No images have been defined or default image doesn't exist" Windows 2k is the default boot os (bride's box), followed by the two oprions for SuSe 8.2. These have the following lines in lilo.config respectively: image = /boot/vmlinuz (for the SuSE_Linux_8.2 menu item and it exists as defined) and image = /boot/vmlinuz.shipped (for the failsafe menu item and it also exist as defined.) I have this same configuration on my work machine - a windows shop - and it works just fine, so I must be missing something obvious, but for the moment I can't see it. The menu works fine right now as is, in this same boot order without the desired changes to the text in the menu, so the changes sre purely esthetic. Any suggestion gratefully accepted. dave -- David C. Are you sure Lilo is your default boot loader? Grub is the default in 8.2 but lilo is installed. Thanks to all who responded to me on this configuration question. Stupid ME! The solution was very simple once I looked at it hard. I needed to modify boot = /dev/sda change-rules reset default = windows_2K the windows_2k to read windows_2000 to agree with other = /dev/sda1 label = windows_2000 As soon as I did that it wrote out properly. Again, thanks to all. dave Rob Sell wrote:

Do you have a /etc/lilo.conf file ? Are your images listed in it? Maybe post up a copy of your lilo.conf -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation

It's small, so here it all is (with my two changes to the labels): boot = /dev/sda change-rules reset default = windows_2K lba32 menu-scheme = Wg:kw:Wg:Wg message = /boot/message prompt read-only timeout = 80 other = /dev/sda1 label = windows_2000 image = /boot/vmlinuz label = SuSE_Linux_8.2 append = "hda=ide-scsi hdalun=0 splash=silent" initrd = /boot/initrd root = /dev/sdb3 vga = 0x31a image = /boot/vmlinuz.shipped label = failsafe append = "ide=nodma apm=off acpi=off vga=normal nosmp noapic maxcpus=0 3" initrd = /boot/initrd.shipped root = /dev/sdb3 vga = 0x31a

Hmmm, is your bios able to boot from a scsi disk ? The old reliable "/dev/hda1" always works. But I guess in your situation, it won't. :-)
change-rules reset default = windows_2K
Why not try it without this line? You have windows_2K listed, but no label matches it. The first in the list below is the default anyhow.
lba32 menu-scheme = Wg:kw:Wg:Wg message = /boot/message prompt read-only timeout = 80
other = /dev/sda1 label = windows_2000
image = /boot/vmlinuz label = SuSE_Linux_8.2 append = "hda=ide-scsi hdalun=0 splash=silent" initrd = /boot/initrd root = /dev/sdb3 vga = 0x31a
image = /boot/vmlinuz.shipped label = failsafe append = "ide=nodma apm=off acpi=off vga=normal nosmp noapic maxcpus=0 3" initrd = /boot/initrd.shipped root = /dev/sdb3 vga = 0x31a
P.S. Did you know you can now have encrypted passwords with lilo? Just put password="" in the appropriate sections and lilo will stop and ask for the password and encrypt it, so no more bare passwords in lilo.conf. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation

If you look at the file now, I've marked the changes I'm trying to make with ** on both sides. The default labels of windows and linux work just fine. I am simply trying to ident the two OSs more accurately. As long as I don't mess with the labels it works fine. I made a change to the boot order, moving windows tot he top to make it the default and that was accepted just fine, so I'm confused as to why now I'm getting the balk with the text in the label. ;-) One of the joys of playing with computers, I guess.
lba32 menu-scheme = Wg:kw:Wg:Wg message = /boot/message prompt read-only timeout = 80
other = /dev/sda1 label = windows **_2000**
image = /boot/vmlinuz label = **SuSE_** linux **_8.2** append = "hda=ide-scsi hdalun=0 splash=silent" initrd = /boot/initrd root = /dev/sdb3 vga = 0x31a <snip>

Yet another good piece of information; thanks, dave
