This from a friend of mine who is going to insall SUSE on his 'puter. ALL the "bases" are covered but one.......sheet music. I've looked but haven't found anything......does anyone know of such an app.? What's the exact requirement? To typeset sheet music? If so, he may be interested in Lilypond (http://lilypond.org/web/). Regards, -- Andreas Philipp Noema Ltda. Bogotá, D.C. - Colombia http://www.noemasol.com

I don't know what you mean by "converter," but there is Lilypond for which an RPM is included in the SuSE 9.3 distribution. http://lilypond.org/web/
Thanks,

People have suggested rosegarden and lilypond, and there's also
MusiXTeX. Also very much worth considering is MUP:
http://www.arkkra.com
which while not freeware (there's a small "shareware" fee which
is valid for all time) produces excellent results. Unlike both
rosegarden and lilypond, however, you don't have a GUI (allowing
you to "drag&drop" notes etc.), but you type in a textual
specification which MUP then compiles into a PS file of the
score. In this it resembles basic MusiXTeX (which however can
also be used as a backend for the GUI-based programs).
However, I suspect that these, though good for typesetting
sheet music from scratch, are not what Fred's friend is looking
for, since he talks about "taking a played piece and writing
a score", which suggests converting from the performer's output
directly to printed score (or editable equivalent).
I've not encountered such a thing for Linux myself, but then I
never looked for one before! However, entering the search text
"midi to sheet music" linux
into Google throws up a huge number of hits. These may be worth
exploring. If the "played piece" is available as MIDI output
(from e.g. an electronic piano), then there might be a route
to follow somewhere in that Google search or a similar one.
Hoping this helps.
Ted.

It seems, according to
http://www.linux-sound.org/
(under "Music Notation") that Rosegarden now does this:
"Rosegarden score creation from MIDI input and MIDI sequencer,
also exports Csound score file"
Best wishes,
