Is it too much to ask to find a linux instant messenger program compatible with the msn's one? I'm amazed how this linux world has changed during the last year, so, please let me know if I am asking to much,ok? RR __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! gaim.sourceforge.net Install it, and then plugins - load plugin - select "libmsn" and then you just need to input your account info to play with it :-) P_te ps this also knows ICQ, IRC, Yahoo, Jabber etc....

AMSN works well, I use it in Suse 8.1 http://amsn.sourceforge.net John "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -- I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference." -- Robert Frost

Ricardo, A simple search on Google or the SuSE mail archives would have done wonders for your question. I am guessing you didn't search much before asking, from the sound of your question. It's not a matter of the list not wanting to help, as you can see you got a couple answers right away, but it's comforting to know the person has at least put a little effort into it before asking too. Gaim is one of the best around and covers any chatting facility you might want to jump into. There are some others as well available on your SuSE discs. Kopete is another and everybuddy is another, Mozilla offers chat as well as IRC. Of course, AIM is available, but it doesn't deal with MSN. Linux has changed a lot, you are right, and it's kept up with everything and exceeded many things. (Hi Pat:) What I'm looking for though that I still haven't found is a IM client that will handle IRC but also will simply "blink" the icon in the taskbar when a new message arrives. I can't seem to configure GAIM to do this and couldn't get xchat or xSirc (sp? i'm not on linux now to check) to do it either. I'm surprised they don't have this option since all the IM clients have this feature (at least Yahoo, MSN, and AIM do). Is anyone aware of a Linux chat client that will blink an icon in the task bar when a message arrives (as opposed to popping up the window) and also handles IRC ? Thanks, -- Rick mailto:maillist@reumann.net
yea it would be nice if you could actually have the same MSN, AIM and yahoo messanger that Windows has (even though i love the Linux versions of AIM and i love gaim) but Bill Gates is gunna make MSN messanger for Linux about as soon as they start marketing XENIX again lol :)

AFAIK, there's nothing that does this. However, Gaim will (if you ask it) change the text in the titlebar (and hence on the button) when new msgs arrive, making simple visual inspection easy. You can also configure sounds if you like them. Blinking is on the Gaim "to do" list IIRC, but it's not there yet. Well, I use Epic as my IRC client and when I get a message it beeps the through the speakers. It's called a window bell. You might give that a try. "You can also configure sounds if you like them" in Gaim. I think that most IM clients support this, but not everyone like it (I don't). Yes, almost all use sounds, but the problem with that is I often leave my client minimized and then when I'm gone from the room for a while and come back there could be a message to me that I missed because I missed the sound. Your mention of changing the title bar when a message comes in should work just fine. I'll have to try that later when I get back to my Linux machine. Thanks. -- Rick mailto:maillist@reumann.net
I use AMSN and it works fine for my hotmail and msn accounts. (just like in windows) Leo Rick Reumann wrote:

Kopete can do this. AMSN works just like MSN messenger. You even get pop-up near the right bottom corner when someone logs in, email arives or someone send you a message. Try something first. PL O'Smith wrote:
