SMBClient : Missing First Letter in Filenames
I've just tried setting up Samba to share a windows directory across my home network. On the WIndows ME PC, I create a folder called "SharedData" and allow anyone full access. I create a test file called "tester.txt" in the folder. On my Linux machine I use smbclient to connect to the windows machine. Everything goes well but when I do a "dir" using smbclient the tester.txt file is given as "ester.txt". I create more files but still all files in the folder are listed without their first letter. Strangely, I can issue a "get tester.txt" and the file is copied OK on to my Linux machine. If I use Konqui to access the Windows machine with : smb://WINME/ it shows the "sharedData" folder icon However, it I try to enter the shareddata directory by clicking on the icon, or attempt to enter it with the URL of smb://WINME/shareddata I get the error message --- File "ester.txt" does not exist --- and Konqui refuses to enter the shareddata folder. I'm a newbie at Samba and I inherently distrust anything to do with Windows, so does anyone know what's going on here? I'm using SuSe 8.1 Best wishes - Ken

This is a known problem with smbclient (used by smb:// in kong). I think it was fixed in later versions of samba 2.2.7 etc. Install LinNeighborhood and see if you still have the problem when you mount a share with it. (It use smbmount which does not exhibit the problem). If you want to use smbclient, best to upgrade to latest fix. -- _________________________________________________ John Andersen / Juneau Alaska

Thanks. I'll update my smbclient. Travis Owens in a private email also suggested mounting a samba share. It works great. Best wishes and thanks again. - Ken
