[opensuse] Massive issues with multimedia
I am having many issues with multimedia that I can not figure out how to solve. Most videos will cause VLC or Kaffine to just exit without any errors. MPlayer can play the videos but then it constantly is flashing a message: [AO_ALSA] Unable to find simple control 'PCM',0. These videos are nothing odd, just old .mp4 or .avi videos... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Use "-ao oss" or "-ao pulse" (if you are using pulseaudio) for mplayer instead. Personally I have never encountered this problem, but my mplayer is compiled from svn. For the other programs, try changing the audio system to either oss or pulse in their gui. Charles -- "MSDOS didn't get as bad as it is overnight -- it took over ten years of careful development." In mplayer audio only works via ALSA because that is the only thing on my system. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

In mplayer audio only works via ALSA because tha qt is the only thing on my system.
ALSA has oss emulation, thus "-ao oss" will work. Is the module snd_pcm_oss loaded? What is the output of: ,---- | lsmod | grep oss `---- ? Charles -- "Nature abhors a Vacuum" -- Brian Behlendorf on OSS (Open Sources, 1999 O'Reilly and Associates)

For VLC, try to get some output when starting it from a console with vlc -vvv This is very verbose and should give some more hints. And as you have the problem with different apps: there might be something locking you or you have a generic issue with your soundcard. I had some problems while skype is running for example: it's trying at it's best to keep the soundcard busy, just in case it want's to announce you an incoming ring :) Dominique -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
