[opensuse] Install CD with SuSE11
Hi list, - I need to install SuSE11 on some SUN (Intel) hardware. Alas, the box has only got a CD, not a DVD. And it stubbornly refuses to boot from a USB DVD drive. - If I elect the live-CD as a basis for the installation, it appears from the opensuse web that it will force (?) me to go for KDE4. I want KDE3. Any ideas? -- -------------------------------------------- Med venlig hilsen/best regards Verner Kjærsgaard Novell Certified Linux Professional 10035701 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

What prevents you to install after KDE4, KDE3 and then get rid of the first? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Have you tried using the net-install CD? If not, and you have a good/fast connection or can share the contents of the DVD across a network, you can install that way. Actually, it will also work from a hard drive, though I haven't tried that method. With this method, you simply copy the ISO to the hard drive (possibly USB drive?) and install from it. Of course, you don't want to format the partition holding the ISO. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Correction, that should be contents of the ISO, not just the ISO. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You can copy the files off the dvd into a directory, possibly via usb storage and use the mini cd to boot and start the installation system. Regards Dave P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks for the answers. - the mini-CD seems the easy way. But wait...I can't copy the DVD onto the disk where I'm eventually going to install S11...it's a catch 22. - but can one access the USB storage (The DVD) when booting using the mini-CD? -- -------------------------------------------- Med venlig hilsen/best regards Verner Kjærsgaard Novell Certified Linux Professional 10035701 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I've only ever used a hard drive or directory but as long as there is a device name to access it should work. Regards Dave P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If you have a partition that you're not going to wipe, you can copy the contents to that partition and the installer with use that as a source. Pressing F4 at the initial boot screen, select "Disk" and don't enter anything in the dialog box. The installation system will check each partition on any detected drives to find the installation source.

Try it. Press F4 at the initial boot screen and select CDROM. If it finds the DVD, it should work from there. If not, and you have enough spare space, you can copy the DVD to hard drive and install it directly from there. You need a partition to hold the install software, so unless you're repartitioning or formating the entire drive, it will work. As for USB drives, why not just try it and see what happens? -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
