I just had an interesting experience with my system. There is a YOU patch for X, if you haven't noticed. After I applied it, I continued to work in what I had opened (XEmacs). I went to close one of the XEmacs windows (frames for purists) and wham! My X restarted all by itself. I will therefore advise that you close your apps before applying the patch, and restart X for yourself.
It also mandates that you reinstall the nVidia driver, which I did, and now I don't have 3D. Wonderfull.
Well, now you go run SaX2 which will add a DisplaySize setting to the /etc/X11/XF86Configure making your fonts as big as your thumb. Either that, or find what setting need to be in the XF86Config and put them there yourself. There should/might be an XF86Config.rmpsave. I haven't tried my 3D. Hold on a second.... /usr/lib/qt3/doc/examples/demo/demo& No errors about not having 3D DRI. I never know exactly how to test that it's working correctly. It shows 3D, and runs the animation (a bit jerky).

Run "glxinfo" in a term window and see what it says for "Direct rendering" btw, I didn't have to reinstall the nvidia driver. SuSE's X in 9.0 doesn't overwrite the driver like it did before
Hi, Yesterday, Feb 29, I did the X patches from YOU for both my SMP PCs, and then got the 5336 NVIDIA driver updates from NVIDIA. Followed the SUSE HowTo provided and it all went perfectly. They do explain that 3D performance is 'automagicly' installed despite an error msg that says it is NOT installed. All in all I think this was the smoothest and easiest NVIDIA update to date. And did your 3D performance drop to about 10% of what it was ???? -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org

You may be right, Celestia seems especially slow. So what do we do about it? PeterB -- -- Proud to use SuSE Linux, since 5.2 Loving using SuSE Linux 8.2 MyBlog http://vancampen.org/blog/ Currently listening to The Resophonics http://www.resophonics.com/music.html --

THAT, I do not know. I have a tnt and went from 900+ to 65-80 fps. I don't play games, but my g-kids do. The only thing it affects for me is xscreensaver animations. That I have noticed, anyway. Perhaps someone knowledgeable will give us guidance. xed-fingers. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org
