I'm surfing around on suse.com and I'm trying to compare SuSE Professional 8.2 with SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8, but I don't really find what I'm looking for.. I understand the big difference between the two (with or without United Linux), but not the general idea from an Administrators point of view. What I'm looking for is what kind of admin tools there are to make the admin's life a bit easier.. Like integrated configuration suits for mail handling, file server administration, print service administration etc. I mean, SLES is targeted for the BIG systems, so I thought there must be some really nice features... If I was to administer a system with f.x. 25.000 mail accounts, I really do want a good admin package for it.. :) None of this is written out in "clear text", I haven't found any decent comparison chart either, the closest I came was http://www.suse.com/us/business/products/server/which_version/index.html which doesn't say much, more or less just how much more service and support you get with SLES and how much more capable it is in large scale hardware. So, can anyone please fill me in on the differences from the admin's point of view? Also, they mention somewhere a product called 'eMail Solutions'.. But nothing furter on it?? Is it a part of SLES8, or is it a separate product, so to get it all, you need both SLES8 and then also the eMail services and admin tools? I'm confused.. Anders Norrbring Norrbring Consulting

Anders, I don't know anything about "eMail Solutions", but maybe it is an old name for SLOX (SuSE Linux Open Exchange Server). SLOX is a complete e-mail solution (with OS) that attempts to provide MS Exchange like functionality. It includes proprietary HTTP interfaces (admin and user). IIRC, Comfire is the name of the proprietary package. IIRC, with the web admin interface you can setup users, IPs, DNS, etc. (See recent release notes. The admin interface has been greatly improved recently.) IIRC SLOX comes with United Linux 1.0. (Very similar to SLES 8.) I got the SLOX demo for $20. It is fully functional, but is the Jan. 03 production version of SLOX. No updates are included with the demo. Several major SLOX patchsets have been released in the last 6 months that I would love to try out. Specifically the admin interfaces supposidely have much greater functionallity. Maybe they have upgraded the demo to include these. Personally, I found SLOX overly difficult to use with Outlook as the client (via IMAP). If you just want to use POP, SLOX would likely work great. SLOX is supposed to integrate well with Evolution too (via IMAP or POP). And you would have the ability to experiment with its more advanced features and decide if/when to start using them. FYI: There is a Suse-slox-e mailing list and online demo. HTH Greg -- Greg Freemyer
There is difference. SLES8 is really Suse 8.1 :-)
Maintenance... Hmm. Well, we have legal copy of SLES8.
I _always_ install my own kernel (well, currently this is 2.4.20 from Suse
8.2) to all servers, on which
we don't need certified OS.
Why? For instance, SLES8 kernel still contains XFS 1.1, which is not good
for really loaded file servers, I also
need ACL support on ext3...
I think that you have clear choise- "supported" software or what you really
need ;-)
