[opensuse] OS 10.2 - Problem with Fonts in Main Menu
Greetings everyone, I'm hoping that someone else has come across this problem and has found a fix... For whatever reason, the fonts in the Main Menu and the left side of the Control Center on my new install look terrible. They appear to be jagged and definitely don't look as clear and uniform like the rest of the fonts throughout the desktop. However, when I move my mouse over an item and the button forms around the object, the fonts inside the button look fine. I have some lossless PNG screenshot examples below: Example 1: This shows the fonts in the main menu in their default state. As you can see, they aren't very pretty. Very jagged lines on all text. http://edengelking.com/images/screen1.png Example 2: I have moused-over the "network" section of the menu. You can now tell the difference in fonts, where example 1 above has very hard lines while the mouse-over item in example 2 is clean. http://edengelking.com/images/screen2.png Example 3: I have moused-over the "hard drive" section of the menu. Again, you can tell a big difference between the first example and this example. http://edengelking.com/images/screen3.png Things I have tried to resolve this issue: a) Changed the font properties using gnome-font-properties. I have tried a large variety of fonts and sizes no to avail, including downloading and installing third party fonts. I have also adjusted the font rendering using the four default options and made manual adjustments using the "details" section as well. Nothing helps. b) Change the X video driver. I'm using the standard radeon driver that ships with OS 10.2. I have changed this to the vesa driver to see if it was X that was causing the issue. This didn't help either. c) Loading the Menu Bar. I have loaded the original "Menu Bar" in the panel to see if there could be any similarities between the two. All of the fonts in the menu bar render properly. d) Searching through configuration files. I've gone through quite a few configuration files in the system to see if I can find where the main menu keeps its configuration information, but was unable to find where the information is stored. Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! --Ed -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

[pruned] Do you have anti-aliasing set? (In KDE, Personal Settings>Fonts>Use anti-aliasing.) Basil, I forgot to mention that this is a Gnome-based install. Yes, anti-aliasing is working properly throughout the rest of the desktop. For whatever reason, it just isn't working properly in the new "Main Menu" and Control Center of Gnome, as seen in the screenshot examples. Thanks! --Ed Basil Chupin wrote:

Yes, I was thinking in the same direction. Anti-aliasing on, and click [Configure], and set "Hinting style" not to "Full", but "Medium" or perhaps "Slight". Cheers, Leen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I gathered as much from a comment in previous message which is why I added the reference to KDE :-) .

Have a look at the settings for the various Desktop window/menu elements and see which fonts are assigned to them. Just like in Windows, there are font settings for the various elements (sidebar, table heading, etc). You will find that fiddling with the fonts themselves will/may affect these elements. Only slight hassle with this is that by just setting anti-aliasing you put more load on your CPU and with then engaging the Hinting Style it slows things down more and it's noticeable- of course this effect will depend on what you have for a CPU. Basil, The gnome-font-properties utility will change the font settings in the main menu and control center in Gnome. This includes the font being used by default, and if the font is normal, bold, italic or has a combination of these settings. It also changes the size of the font as well. After each change, either by size, font or bold/italic setting, it still has the same result: jagged fonts until a mouse-over occurs. As mentioned in my initial e-mail, I've gone through these settings using a number of combinations and substitutions to see if it would affect the main menu or control center, but alas there is no difference in the font. :/ Leen, I have made adjustments to the font rendering multiple times. I have tried monochrome, best shapes, best contrast, subpixel smoothing. I have also gone into the "details" section and have tried all possible combinations of smoothing, hinting and subpixel order to see if that would make any difference. Unfortunately it didn't. --Ed Basil Chupin wrote:

I don't use Gnome, so can't check myself, but check your anti-aliasing configuration. If hinting is set to "full" or whatever equivalent Gnome might label maximum, set it to something else, restart X, and report back if there is any improvement. -- "Let your conversation be always full of grace." Felix, Unfortunately, I've tried restarting after each change, but to no improvement in the main menu or control center. I do, however, see immediate changes throughout the rest of the desktop. --Ed Felix Miata wrote:

"Until a mouse-over occurs". Hmmm... Does it only happen in this particular instance? Or do other applications suffer the same effect/defect?

Ah, :( that's a pity. Like Basil, I remembered an earlier thread about this, but that was KDE-specific. Cheers, Leen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, it might be noticeable. But I wonder if it's noticeable enough to tell if the setting is on or off. ;) Cheers, Leen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Just in these two specific items, I'm afraid. Other items that have the same mouse-over affect, such as the applications in the Control Center, work as expected.

That's OK. Perhaps someone else might have come across the same issue in Gnome and know exactly what needs to be adjusted. Thanks for the help from everyone thus far. :) --Ed -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Just an interesting additional two notes: I just tried to change my monitor resolution to a lower setting to see what would happen. My current resolution is 1280x1024@60 on a 19" LCD monitor. When I changed the resolution to 1024x768@60, the fonts were smooth, yet everything else seemed a bit blurry. I think this was due to how an LCD monitor tries to adjust for resolutions that they're not specifically designed for. However, I find it interesting that this resolution change would've made that big of a difference with these fonts. Also, another thing I checked while I was at it ... I changed the default color settings from 24-bit to 16-bit and restarted my X session. This didn't make any kind of difference at all. .... now back to your regularly scheduled program ... --Ed -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
