I don't give up easily, but I'm through using SuSE as a print server
I have a video graphics business and we have been using SuSE in multiple computers as a firewall, fileserver, webserver, coldfusion server, database server and even as a print server, but after tonight, print server is gone from the list of duties I will ask SuSE to perform for me. I will not waste another minute troubleshooting printing in SuSE. After trying to use SuSE 8.0 for a simple w2k and MacOSX file/printer server, I'm done with lpr, I'm done with CUPS, I'm done printing monochrome, greyscale or postscript on Linux. I did many clean installs, using the default settings and trying CUPS. Mixed results everytime. I even have a HP6MP, supposedly an ideal printer for postscript printing under Linux but the best I ever got in over two years of literal pain, was everything prints fine from my w2k computers, but my Macs can't print .pdf or Illustrator files, also essentially postscript files. I lived in fear of postscript files gone mad emptying my paper try with gibberish printout, and tonight I'm free of that fear. It's a defeat to be sure, but for now, I'm just plain relieved to be be done with it. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? LAUNCH - Your Yahoo! Well, if you want a true printer solution under Linux why not spend the cash to get ESP Pro which is much more refined then CUPS (free version of ESP Pro). I mean CUPS *is* free. If you want something that works and will give you someone to call and help you through things ..then I suggest ESP Pro. I have a SuSE 8.0 box here and it prints pretty damn well for 55 people in my dept..which includes about 40 engineers, 5 project managers (using Windows), and 5 UI developers running Mac's (OSX). I mean if your gonna give up on things such as CUPS then your really, really gonna hate the fact that Apple licensed CUPS/ESP Pro from ESP and is integrating it into the next full version of OSX due out in August. And I know..I know..." But were on OS9. Well, that maybe true for a bit but it's been "end of lifed" at Apple so OSX is going to be the default from now on. Just my opinion. *shrug* * Scheme Loh (schemebot@yahoo.com) [020522 21:49]: ::I have a video graphics business and we have been ::using SuSE in multiple computers as a firewall, ::fileserver, webserver, coldfusion server, database ::server and even as a print server, but after tonight, ::print server is gone from the list of duties I will ::ask SuSE to perform for me. I quit printing on Linux - lprng and CUPS. I know OSX will use CUPS and I've never even gotten my Stylus Color 980 to work under OSX with Epson's horrid v1.0 drivers. Gutenburg is laughing, no doubt. Luckily my world is small, well under 10 users, so it's more a personal failure on my part, than a big problem for my workflow. Suse almost worked as a print server, it just never totally worked, and was never that reliable when it did work. The real killer for me was postscript. Illustrator/PDF files from my Macs would just spit out page after page of junk. I used and set-up the Macs several times using HP drivers, and I configured the printer via Linux linux times and they just never meshed. For the most part, text documents and picture would print from both Macs and w2k. But far too many hangs, loosing the ability to print altogether, and pages of junk to make this truly viable in my case. Thanks to the list for not calling me a "retarded whiner", but I have dealt with this for a long time and last night when my paper tray quickly spat out 100 pages of postscript junk, that was it. Rage left my body, I felt a calming peace sweep over me, my room got real bright, and a vision told me to just give it up, it ain't worth it. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
