Suse 9.0 installs but will not run GUI
Hi there all. I am a newbie installing SuSE 9.0 Things went really well but when it rebooted for the very first boot there popped up a message: Your computer does not fulfill all requirements for a graphical installation. There is less than 6mb memory or the x server could not be started. It then took me through the rest of the install without the fancy windows. Now it is installed and all I get is a login prompt and a command line, no KDE. :-( It seems very strange. I have had Suse 8,2 running on this machine with KDE with no problems. It has 512 MB ram. Any idea what the problem could be and how I can fix it? Regards, Dan

That sounds like a problem that is probably covered under your SuSE installation support, even though my experience with installation support is that practically everything I've ever asked them, they've told me it's not within the scope of the support. Paul Abrahams
OPS - it is a FTP install - free - so their is no SUSE support with it ;-) Paul W. Abrahams wrote:

However, I poked around with SAX2 and Yast, focusing on my monitor resolution/frequency and rebooted a couple of times. Eventually, KDE started. Wish I could remember what I did :)
Hi there. I still haven't worked out the problem, I decided to format the machine and reinstall SuSE 9.0 but the result is the same. Sorry about my ignorance but is Sax2 and how to I run it? I have tried typing SAX and SAX2 at the command line while logged in as root without any luck Albert wrote:

It's SuSE's graphical setup for the x server, i.e. it will attempt to let you set up your graphical environment in an easy, user friendly way. I haven't followed this thread, so forgive me if I'm wrong, but I assume you're having difficulty getting the graphical environment running. I have installed several time from ftp recently because I kept reading people were having problems, and I must say I've yet to encounter a problem. I don't think the fact that your graphics setup has proved problematic is related to an ftp install.

Get a root prompt and do 'init 3'. Then type sax2, not SAX2, this should start a graphical installer, in which you specify your hardware if it's not detected, choose colour depth and resolution and various other things, then test the environment, adjust it, and save the settings. Once that's done, do 'init 5' and you should get X - if this doesn't work, come back to the list. HTH Fergus

Thanks, Fergus. And apologies to Dan. I forgot that I received a message to 'init 3' when I executed 'sax2'. My problem seemed to be that the FTP install didn't detect my video/monitor properly and it needed manual setup. I hope your reply helps Dan. <snip>
