Hi: The kernel line in the grub configurator has a kernel parameter called "resume" that appears to point to a swap partition. What is this for? Thanks. -- ____________________________________ Christopher R. Carlen Principal Laser/Optical Technologist Sandia National Laboratories CA USA crcarle@sandia.gov

hibernation. It is possible to get the computer to enter a stand-by state where it puts all the contents of the internal memory in the swap partition and powers off. With that resume parameter, the kernel checks the named partition for such a memory image on boot, and if present, restores the machine to the state it was in before hibernation. If you have the kernel sources installed you can read the details in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/power/swsusp.txt

Wow.
Indeed, it's pretty cool. You need an ACPI enabled chipset (most modern laptops will have this), and it doesn't always work. You can set it up in the power management section (I think) of YaST in 9.1 -- James Ogley, Webmaster, usr local bin & Planet SuSE james@rubberturnip.org.uk www.rubberturnip.org.uk Updated GNOME packages for SUSE LINUX: www.usr-local-bin.org Latest SUSE News and Blogs: www.planetsuse.org
