System Crashes after YOU update
Hi there, well, the subject says it all: my SuSE 9.0 Pro at home crashes from time to time (it powers off!!!) w/o any aparent reason and it's patched with the latest updates found by YOU yesterday night (23.05.2004). Looking at /var/log/messages I can't find any clue on what's happening; only a 'last' command shows me the damn word "crash"... Is there any other place I should take a look at to find out what's going on?? Is there any "do-it-yourself" system debug method to find the reasons for those crashes? Thanks, Martin

Maybe one of the patches from 23-05 did it. You can try to reinstall the
packages that were patched. Run this command to find the patches, and
then reinstall the original packages from the DVD:
ls -lt /var/lib/YaST2/you/installed | awk '$6 ~ "2004-05-23" { print $0
}'

Removing the 'desktop'-entry from the menu.lst didn't help that much, as the system still freezes (BTW - what's that 'desktop' for?)

No way... the system has turned very unstable to stay operational for, say, longer than 10 minutes... I'm considering backing up my sensitive data and reinstall from scratch... :/ it sucks... Any other ideas before that? TIA, Martin

Yes, that damn YOU-thing also patched the kernel... Furthermore, another symptom now is that the 3D-acceleration can't be turned on... althoug I already downloaded/installed the patch/driver/module from nvidia.com for my (yes, old) RivaTNT some months ago the system now says that I should run SaX2 (already done n-times!) after that driver has been installed - everything worked fine until I did the last recommended online update... #%&@$!!! Have you checked that the Kernel sources were also updated you is good at just updating the the running modules but leaving the complete sources out and no full source tree no Nvidia 3D driver been there and gotten bitten by you thats why i now do it all by hand at least i know what has and has not been done .. Did you do a memtest? I also had a system that was suddenly very unstable. First I also removed the "desktop-entry", this didn't help. After that I did the memtest86 (on the install-cd) and found out that one (almost brand new) memory device was broken. Replaced it and now it's very stable Hope this helps, Coen (coen@sms.nl)

memtest has been running all night long... when I came to work it was on pass 6 without errors. It will be running the whole day till I'm back home... but I guess that the RAM is not the problem... Before launching memtest the system was up in graphical mode running KDE 3.1 ... and whoops! KDE crashes with a SIG11 :-( I'll try with KDE 3.2.2 before reinstalling from scratch... but, IMHO, this shouldn't be the solution. Thoughts? Martin

I stopped memtest after pass 14 without errors, so it should make clear that the memory is not an issue...

I recently purchased a new machine which had DDR memory and a ASUS a7n8x-e mother board. It had problems with locking up when X was started. memtest (latest version) was run and no error showed up. The memory passed memtest. I returned to the place I bought it and asked for help. They tested it and after replacing the memory it is working correctly ( short of Nvidia 3D headaches). So, memtest is nice but doesn't always prove that memory is works with your machine. 73 de Donn Washburn aka N5XWB
