It seems a bit silly to have a heavy duty SCSI 29160 adaptor in the low-end IDE box that I'm trying out for SuSE 6.4, but that's how it works. I figured that the easiest way of reconfiguring my system was to do a full re-install since the YaST utility made things so push-button. But, no success. After the first CD loaded to the 40% mark everything hung. The mouse responded, but that was all: The buttons did not. With Linux and with this distro I'm a newbie. I would like to know if the Adaptec 29160 works with 6.4 and if so, how (cookbook-style, please!) I add the kernel module. Within the next month I will add a 10/100Mb/sec network card to my SuSE box and tie it in with my other systems; until then, the Linux box it strictly unconnected.... thanks for any clues re the 29160, gary -- Gary D. Since you have such a fancy controller in there, I presume you have a reasonable amount of memory (at least 32M) in that machine? Also, the controller is supported, isn't it (since you say you've loaded the module, I *assume* it's supported)? You could try using Yast1, which you will get if you boot off the second CD, rather than the first one. That may make a difference - it looks a bit uglier, but you have much greater control. If you've read subsequent emails, then you know that % modprobe aic7xxx hangs. If fact, everything I've tried when I try to get the 29160 recognized hangs the system. Is there a *new* PCI?? If modprobe of instmod(?) issued some warning or error message after some N seconds (like: may be having trouble loading module), that might help. Reading the README notes on the aic7 driver I see that it comes from the *BSD world. Fine, but BSD can be very touchy if hardware isn't precisely right. What would likely cause these module utilities to hang? Anybody have a clue? The system is cheap but well loaded. 500MHz, 64MB RAM, 10GB IDE, sound chip, Win(Lose)Modem, etc.
Welcome to SuSE,
Thanks. I think SuSE will be a great platform to port my light-sound mindzapper (X Window + audio) suite. Looking forward to the port.... gary -- Gary D. Gary, I am using a 39160 card in my server and used YaST 1 to do the complete install, on the initial install I selected Load modules -->SCSI module -->aic7xxx. The card recognized and come right up. I did have to do a complete reinstall, but it worked. Hm, and hmmmm. Well, if it came right up, then my card or the cabling (or *something*) has to be loose. --Or maybe (least likely), the cheapo box is just too too cheap... but I don't think so... thanks, gary

I have the same card and use 6.4. It works with the AIC7XXX module (6.3 did as well). I believe that there is an appropriate HOWTO for modules. Rob. Gary Kline wrote:

Whew!! Okay, now can anyone give me a pointer to the right HOWTO to get the kernel module selected? I did some searching around for Linux (SuSE) HOWTO's several days ago and didn't find anything. (I remember these how-to files from trying Debian... that was 3+ years ago.) Anybody got a URL or two? thanks much, gary

thanks much,
BTW, going from IDE to SCSI-LVD160 gave me the biggest incremental boost in overall performance that I have seen in a long long time. Rob.

Mm, thanks for the data-point. I've got a 500MHz CPU, but the performance is really slow. Once I've got my SCSI drive recognized, I will need to know how to partition the drive into /usr/local/src and /home and /pub. So far, my freeUnix experience is limited to FreeBSd which is non-trivial. I'm hoping that slicing up this drive under Linux is no more difficult. gary -- Gary D.
