My SuSE 6.3 broke down recently, and all I could do was boot from floppy. Because some files were corrupted I decided to do an update of SuSE. The machine I'm doing this on doesn't have a CD player, so I went for the FTP update option.
When I chose ftp install and gave the necessary details of the ftp server the update/install stopped saying that I needed a machine with at least 32Mb memory to do an ftp update. Why? I asked myself, and then I realized: My machine has exactly 32Mb of memory! What's happening here? Is this a classic programming mistake? Or is something more profound happening here?
And more importantly: is there a way around this problem? I used both Suse 6.3 and Suse 6.4 boot floppies and they both displayed the same problem.
It feels like overkill to buy more memory just to install a system that is never ever going to use more than 32Mb.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do an update on a machine that does have a dedicated internet connection and a floppy drive, but no CD player? (O, and did I mention 32Mb memory :-)
The ftp installation takes up more memory, since YaST has to cache some files (e.g. package information). I would recommend doing an NFS installation - many download sites allow you to mount their shares via NFS, too. You can try ftp.gwdg.de for example. Thanks for the advice, this was something I didn't try yet. However, now I have tried it, it didn't work :-( Can you tell me what the directory name is that I need to mount from ftp.gwdg.de? I looked for info on that site, but didn't find any. Plus, does anyone know whether there is a list of publicly accesible NFS servers carrying SuSE? Cheers, Tobias

We are currently compiling a list (as an SDB article). The only one I know of so far is this one: linux01.gwdg.de:/suse/7.0/i386.de/ For updates, use this share: linux01.gwdg.de:/suse/ftp.suse.com/pub Bye, LenZ -- ------------------------------------------------------------------ Lenz Grimmer SuSE GmbH mailto:grimmer@suse.de Schanzaeckerstr. 10 http://www.suse.de/~grimmer/ 90443 Nuernberg, Germany October; When trees change from hirsuties to bald pates.

What are the chances of providing an rsync server on the SuSE ftp server?
