[SLE] SANE and UMAX help needed
Hi everyone, After checking the sane homepage and realzing that I can not get UMAX Astra 1220 S by no means in Turkey I got myself UMAX Astra 2200 USB SCSI. I would like to writedown what I have done so far maybe someone could show me the way cause I am getting lost. I knew the scsi card coming out of the umax package was not supported under linux (except for the isa one but it did not work with me) I installed a Tekram DC390 pci scsi card to the system. Tried it under the Win98se got it working there. I am using a compiled kernel already with generic scsi support so I can use my ide-atapi cdwriter. ince the scsi card info was not included in my kernel I decied to included manualy. $ modprobe tmscsim $ sgcheck founds the scsi emulation at sg0 for the cdwriter scsi at sg1 for umax astra 2200 After reading the info at the sane home page and checking my suse 6.3 sane versions I decided to get the source from the homepage both for the sane 1.02 and the sane- umax 1.02 I upgraded the gimp from the suse site to 1.14 and also got the shared libraries. I compiled it under /usr/local/sane-1.02 directory after applying the umax patch as indicated by the readmes's. I downloaded xsane-0.57 also and compiled it. edited the /etc/ld.so.conf added the/usr/local/bin/sane ran SuSEconfig I did scanimage -T option and everything passed (at least these are the messages I saw). Being very happy log in to the Xenvironment run KDE open xterm type xsane No devices available What did I do wrong or what I am missing ? thx in advance -- Togan Muftuoglu toganm@yahoo.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Just as a casual advice: in such cases it's better to create groups whose
members should be allowed to use a facility, chgrp the device to that group
and then add the respective user to that group. That's *much* safer than
opening up a device for everybody.
Just keep in mind, that if you choose to go that route, the respective user
has to relogin in order for the new group memberships to become active (the
command `id' will show you).

Hi, Trying to set up a Iomega zip driver. I have tried "modprobe ppa", but receive: ...ppa.o: init_module: Device or resource busy ...ppa.o: insmod ...ppa.o faild ...ppa.o: insmod ppa failed I guess it is to do with interupt settings... Any ideas? If this is a parallel ZIP drive, I'd say the real problem is that you're
using the wrong driver ;-) Try 'modprobe imm' and see if that works. If it
does, and your machine is otherwise using IDE, I'd recommend changing
alias scsi_hostadapter off
to
alias scsi_hostadapter imm
in /etc/modules.conf (or /etc/conf.modules for SuSE Linux releases before
6.3).

Yes, it is the parallel port version.
Try 'modprobe imm' and see if that works.
No, I get the same errors as above, but with 'imm' instead of 'ppa'. Cheers Phil -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

OK, so more precise info is needed:
- which version of SuSE Linux are you using?
- are you using the standard kernel from your distribution or a self
compiled one?
- any additional messages relating to this in /var/log/messages?
- what options get passed to the parport module, possibly from
/etc/modules.conf?
- what are the settings for the parallel port in the BIOS of your
machine?

Standard (AFAIK)

That's only a rather harmless notice. If it bugs you, just do a 'depmod' after changing modules.conf and it'll vanish.

Parallel Port Address = Auto Parallel Port Status = LPT1 378 IRQ7
First of all, try setting Port Address to a fixed value, e.g. 378.
I am guessing it is something to do with the parport options as there is no IRQ setting in there..
Nope, my experience tells me, that no IRQ is needed. But experiment yourself
and change the line in modules.conf to
options parport_pc io=<address set in BIOS> irq=7,none
If parport doesn't report a device, I'd guess the error must be somewhere
else, f.i. in the cabeling. If you also have Windows running on the machine,
does it work there?

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding something. I was refering to the fact that LPT1 in windows = lp0 in Linux. Hi,

When running depmop, I get the following: depmod: *** Unresoved Symbols in .../block/ide-probe-mod.o depmod: *** Unresoved Symbols in .../misc/isdn_bsdcomp.o depmod: *** Unresoved Symbols in .../pcmcia/mtok_cb.o depmod: *** Unresoved Symbols in .../pcmcia/mtok_cs.o Again, not sure if this has anything to do with my problem (I am not using ISDN or PCMCIA), but it needs fixing at some point.

I have set "Parallel Port Address" to LPT1 378 IRQ7, still does not work...

I used to have Windows on this machine and it worked, I also have a number of other Windows machines that it works on. Two things that are concerning me, When I run modprobe imm, I get Imm.o: init_module: Device or Resource Busy. Does this mean I have a conflict? Also the Zip drive is a Zip250, not a Zip100. I can only find info on the web about connecting a Zip100 drive under Linux, and the Zip250 requires different drivers under Windows, is is actually supported? It doesn't have anything to do with with your ZIP drive.

Hmm, do you also have a parallel printer? If yes, try hooking it up to the port *instead* of the drive and print something directly to the port, e.g. 'cat /etc/fstab > /dev/lp0'. That would at least show if the port is working at all. BTW, what's the output of 'uname -a' on that machine?
Imm.o: init_module: Device or Resource Busy. Does this mean I have a conflict?
Not necessarily. You'll get that message also if no device is detected.
Also the Zip drive is a Zip250, not a Zip100. I can only find info on the web about connecting a Zip100 drive under Linux, and the Zip250 requires different drivers under Windows, is is actually supported?
I just don't know. I only have the parallel ZIP 100 and an internal ATAPI
ZIP 100. You could try contacting the author of the ppa/imm driver and ask
him. Otherwise I'm out of ideas at the moment.
