Programming languages in SuSE Linux? / camels on the desktop
Hi, A few days ago I was talking to a colleague who is about to start on SuSE 7.3 on a new box, and he asked me about which programming languages one could be using on SuSE. I had to admit that me being far too stoopid to program anything just had no idea. Well, I know, the tarballs are c and you use the gcc compiler for it. And maybe you do know some awesome homepages to have a look at ... Btw, the camel on the desktop is great, it's a 32*32 png and I copied it to /opt/kde2/share/icons/hicolor/32x32/apps, where it can be accessed directly via the icon chooser. Cheers .... What does he want to do? Linux supports just about every programming language, some better than others. If he wants to do GUI stuff with an IDE then C++/KDevelop, Java/JBuilder or Kylix/Kylix would be the best options. All are free (in one sense or another) for at least the base version. If he wants webish/CGI/admin sort of things then Perl would be the one to go for. Tcl/Tk makes a great prototyping language for GUI work and is a great tool for small user facing applications in it's own right. At the system level, C is the only sensible option. People rave about Python but I've never tried it myself.

This is not a complete list, but you can program in C, C++, Perl, Python, Tcl, and Java. -v -- Victor R. Cardona Powered by SuSE Linux 7.1 (i386) Professional GPG key ID E81B3A1C Key fingerprint = 0147 A234 99C3 F4C5 BC64 F501 654F DB49 E81B 3A1C

The answer is yes. In many ways, I'm not even joking. -- James Oakley Engineering - SolutionInc Ltd. joakley@solutioninc.com http://www.solutioninc.com
The only three languages I know that aren't available with SuSE are Visual Basic C# APL The first is designed by idiots for idiots and is full of bugs. I once had to remove a hyphen from a comment to get a program to compile. The second I guess is an attmpt to do what java does better. The third is probably out of date by now. But C, C++, Perl, Java, Python, Forth, Ada, Pascal, Basic, Fortran, Lisp, PHP are all available. JDL wolfi wrote:
