[opensuse] Build Service Index or Search?
Since the Build Service has become such a wealth of packages, is there any way to search for a package there? I realize there is individual indexes for a particular version for adding as a Yast source, but there are a number of times I have wondered if a certain package was available, but searching through every directory and subdirectory is a daunting task. Just wondering if there already exists such a thing, which I think would be a very helpful feature. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.2 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Why would anyone know about that? And why isn't it on the build service or at least hosted at opensuse? I run into the same problem often. Google sometimes helps but I can't believe an search and index was not builtin from the ground up. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I have record of it mentioned in "opensuse" list in no less than 8 posting since 12 Dec last not counting this thread :^) not much but it is HERE. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 OpenSUSE Linux http://en.opensuse.org/ Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

But it doesn't list all... I tried searching for OpenOffice, and it found only two places for 10.2, with only version 2.0.4 available: Results from http://.../suse/update/10.2 Results from http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.2/repo/oss/suse But it doesn't list .../opensuse/repositories/OpenOffice.org/openSUSE_10.2, which contains a much recent version. Only the top results are returned, There are hundreds of matches for openoffice, searching for http://benjiweber.co.uk:8080/webpin/index.jsp?searchTerm=openoffice_org-kde shows up the repository you mentioned. Ranking the results to show the most relevant in each possible case is a challenge, any suggestions are welcome. _ Benjamin Weber -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Let me see if I can duplicate. I go to http://benjiweber.co.uk:8080/webpin/, I type "openoffice", enter, and I only see those two sites (oss and update servers), I do not see where I can click to expand the search to get those missing repositories. I get here: http://benjiweber.co.uk:8080/webpin/index.jsp?distro=openSUSE_102&searchTerm=openoffice And as I say, I only see two repos: update and oss, with several packages each, but only of version 2.0.4 (twenty files in total, not hundreds). However, if I search for "openoffice_org-kde" instead (why should I type such a long name when searching for "openfoffice" I dunno) then I get three entries: updates, oss, and finally, the repo I wanted (three files in total). I don't understand why typing a more precise search word (it requires me knowing the exact filename I want, and I may not know it) finds more server entries. It should be the contrary. But I never see the hundreds of matches you mention. Do results depend on something on the client side? - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Neither found more, in each case the top 20 results only were shown. The results in the main repository were being ranked higher because they had more search term matches in the package name, the summary, and the files contained in the package. Hence the "openoffice" package from the build service repository was being dropped off the bottom. btw there are over 300 packages matching openoffice either in the name, filelists, or summary. I have adjusted the ranking so this case will work better http://benjiweber.co.uk:8080/webpin/index.jsp?searchTerm=openoffice will now show results from all 3 repositories. Also things like http://benjiweber.co.uk:8080/webpin/index.jsp?searchTerm=nx will work better Adding result paging would be possible, but I don't know of anyone who actually bothers to look at multiple pages of results so it's probably better to improve the ranking system where you spot problems like this. In the future with the software portal project we'll have a better metric - user rating to apply to search results. _ Benjamin Weber -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Ah, I see. The search finds many, but only the top found are shown.

Yes, I just tried.

A toggle to show all results? Or to show top 20, top 50, top 120, say?

It is indeed a very usefull tool. I have been following the mesages about it for some time, but never actually tried till today. I hope to see it growing ;-) - -- Cheers, Carlos E. A toggle to show all results? Or to show top 20, top 50, top 120, say? I would second this one. Also, perhaps it would be possible to not only make a selection based on version but also on arch. For example, I just searched for openoffice, and though it did now list the build service repo, it is only finding the i586 version (2.1), though I just updated to 2.2 from there yesterday (but x86_64 arch). So perhaps an additional switch to raise the rank of x86_64 packages would be nice.
