Hi: I would like to know if any SuSE users are successfully running ATI Radeon video cards. Also is there any command I can issue from the xterm to tell if I need an AGP or PCI video card? -- Cheers, Jonathan

As long as you are using X 4.02 or > the Radeon is supported. I ran 7.1 a sytem using the Radeon without problem. Have yet to install 7.2 on that system but I have no doubt the it will also work. As long as you have the proper slot you can use either PCI or AGP, better performance is obtained with, and all newer cards are AGP. That being said the AGP slot is itself seen and addressed by linux and is in actuality a specialized PCI slot. Charles (-: Forever never goes beyond tomorrow.
Thanks Charles: I wrote earlier about ATI RAGE cards but the Computer stores near me don't carry them any more. On Tuesday 24 July 2001 08:38 pm, you wrote:

I issued the following command and found the following PCI devices: poincare@linux:~ > /sbin/lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 440BX/ZX - 82443BX/ZX Host bridge (rev 03) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 440BX/ZX - 82443BX/ZX AGP bridge (rev 03) 00:07.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82371AB PIIX4 ISA (rev 02) 00:07.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82371AB PIIX4 IDE (rev 01) 00:07.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82371AB PIIX4 USB (rev 01) 00:07.3 Bridge: Intel Corporation 82371AB PIIX4 ACPI (rev 02) 00:0e.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10000 (rev 07) 00:0e.1 Input device controller: Creative Labs SB Live! (rev 07) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Riva TnT2 [NV5] (rev 11 I noticed that there is mention of an AGP bridge. Does that mean I can use an AGP card? As you can see, I know very little about computer hardware. However, I do want to replace this worthless nVIDIA card. -- Cheers, Jonathan

A word of warning. There is a problem running X11 on Radeon cards with some Athlon motherboards. The AMD northbridge freezes the machine if you attempt to use the Radeon's hardware acceleration. A workaround for the latest version of XFree86 was posted to the xpert mailing list some time ago. I haven't tried it yet but will be doing so this weekend. I'll post the result to this list.
