[opensuse] Splitting MP3's
Can anyone recommend an app to split large MP3's into a specified number of pieces or parts of a set length? Hi John, Check under 'Multimedia' -> 'Media Editing' to confirm that Audacity is installed. Thanks for the reply; I'd forgotten about Audacity. Unfortunately, I installed Audacity from Suse repo but on trying to load a MP3 file it tells me Audacity was not compiled with MP3 support. Really Audacity is overkill for what I want to do. -- John K Masters - User #417400 in the Linux Counter http://counter.li.org/ No trees were killed in the creation of this message. Install the Packman version and also make sure lame is installed to get around the 'oem' SUSE restriction. Audacity may look like it's "overkill" but you might be surprised to find, after a little use, that it is very easy *and* handy for editing out lots of "ummms" and "aahhhhs" as well as coughs and sneezes, etc. ;-) I guess it always depends on one's application. regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hmm already hitting the dependancy issues that drove me to Debian. :) Installed libmad but rpm -Uvf audacity* fails dependancy libmad.so.0 This is the first I've used Suse since 7.1 and, although much easier to install, it is still suffering from an outdated package management system. I've used Audacity before on Debian and Slackware but never for splitting MP3's. -- John K Masters - User #417400 in the Linux Counter http://counter.li.org/ No trees were killed in the creation of this message. Googled like mad (pun intended) for a solution but it seems that this is common and unsolvable. Carl. Thank you for your patience but it seems I DO have to compile as the repos, including Packman, do NOT provide Audacity with MP3 support WITHOUT installing extra libs, which the RPM then does not see. If you Google for ``audacity libmad'' you will see many examples of failed attempts to install Audacity and NO solutions. It seems it's a Suse thing. Not to worry, I'm only passing through as they say. I have tried hard to like Suse over the years (and there are a lot of things to like) but I shall probably go back to Deb or maybe Slack. LOL, John - you don't have to "try hard to like suse", you need only use the fine package management systems available for suse. Others here have been using audacity with no problems; they simply used the package management system to install it and all it's dependencies automagically, They've tried to gently explain, but it seems you don't want to hear about it. Looks good. I installed smart and all your suggested repos. Installed Audacity (after uninstalling previous attempt) but still get the same message about not compiled with MP3 support. You can do it too with YaST. Add http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/packman/suse/10.2 as an installation source to YaST (YaST -> Software -> Installation Source). Install audacity from **packman** with YaST (YaST -> Software -> Software Management). To identify audacity from packman, note the 'pm' in the version (column 'Avail.Ver.'). I installed 1.3.2-0.pm.beta. Or check the "Version"-tab in the bottom-right pane of YaST. You should have to versions there: 1.2.4b-55 from openSUSE and 1.3.2-0.pm.beta (packman's). Select Packman's. Click the "Accept" button. In my case, a window opened, notifying Automatic changes: libid3tag, libmspack, mad, wxGTK. The mad package is from packman. These 4 packages are also installed. Click "Continue" to continue (doh!). After installing, I ran audacity, and opened an mp3-file. It imported the file, without complaining. I pressed the "Play"-button and the file played (I could hear it). I guess this audacity does have mp3 support. #> rpm -qa | egrep 'audacity|lame' lame-3.96.1-2 twolame-0.3.8-0.pm.1 audacity-1.3.2-0.pm.beta Cheers, Leen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Glad you got it working, but somehow I doubt there was any need for a reboot. Probably that was just one way of reloading a service or something - in 12 years of linux I've never seen a case where it was necessary to reboot after installing a program.

This is the first I've used Suse since 7.1 and, although much easier to install, it is still suffering from an outdated package management system.
There is nothing "outdated" about rpm, John. You just haven't learned how to configure your installation sources correctly. There are 'third party' package repositories (like Packman and Guru, for example) and alternative 'package management' front-ends available, too, including smart and apt.
I've used Audacity before on Debian and Slackware but never for splitting MP3's.
If you're having problems installing Audacity, that doesn't mean it isn't worth installing or that it isn't an appropriate tool for the kind of project you described. I repeat: one's choice of tools is driven by the requirements. If you're splitting 'commercial/broadcast quality' audio then Audacity might not be an appropriate choice. But I have no way of knowing that. You only said the files were 'long' and needed to be split into shorter segments. In these situations I sometimes prefer to 'audition' prospective break points by ear. I also like to add fade-out/fade-in effects, as needed, and to 'normalize' and/or 'compress' and/or 'equalize' and/or filter out unwanted noise, also as needed. So, use whatever tool you like best that you can get installed. Linux is all about choice, right? regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Try mp3splt. Get it from here: http://mp3splt.sourceforge.net/ The good thing about mp3splt is that it will split your mp3 without decoding them, therefore there won't be any loss in quality.
