[opensuse] oS 13.2 KDE4 and dictd
Hi All, I installed dictd from the opensuse-education repo using zypper (Thanks OpenSUSE Education!!!) It installed fine but without a default configuration, i.e.: carlh@linux:~> dict example 'dict.conf' doesn't specify any dict server This is for my own personal use and the system isn't a server. What's the minimal config needed to get it working? I've read the man pages and reviewed the supplied example configurations but none of them seem to clearly discuss or explain my admittedly rudimentary requirements. In the latter case, it's almost as though all the comments have been stripped from the .conf files. TIA & regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

It is asking for a server to reference, not wanting you to serve. /etc/dict.conf server dict.org server dict.us.dict.org server dict0.us.dict.org server dict1.us.dict.org server alt0.dict.org server all.dict.org server lividict.org server dict.uni-leipzig.de server dict.bober757.org.ru use any one or all or .... -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

That does the trick. Thanks Patrick! :-) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

'dict.conf' is the client configuration. 'dictd.conf' is the server configuration. You can have a local server, that is queried by your local clients: site nimrodel.valinor access { allow * } database web1913 { data "/usr/lib/dict/web1913.dict.dz" index "/usr/lib/dict/web1913.index" access { allow * } } database jargon { data "/usr/lib/dict/jargon.dict.dz" index "/usr/lib/dict/jargon.index" access { allow * } } I don't have the dictd service installed, but I did once and I still have the config laying around. I even have the dictionaries, from 2005. It made sense with slow internet. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 13.1 x86_64 "Bottle" at Telcontar)

Thanks for the clarification and examples, Carlos! dict is one of those very useful utilities that I'd lost track of sometime around the GNOME2-GNOME3 transition ... when I moved back to KDE(4). It's nice to have it available again. regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Welcome. There are also applets for the desktop that query dict servers, local or remote. I see one for XFCE. Does searches on wikipedia and others, too, but they open in Firefox, not inside. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 13.1 x86_64 "Bottle" at Telcontar)
