Hi ! I am just starting using Linux (SuSE 9.2) and I´d like to use it also for my connection to Internet via aDSL. But I´m not sure which devices are capable running under SuSE. There are these types of modems (Draytek Vigor 318 USB or Microcom AD 2622), and routers (Alcatel SpeedTouch 510i or Draytek Vigor 2600 Ge) that could be used. I was searching in the hardware database at http://cdb.novell.com, but I could find there only two of older Draytek routers (2200X and 2500We), both with "problematic! status. Does somebody USE any of above mentioned four devices and if, are there any problems? Thank in advance for any advice Jan Sedivy jsedivy@stonline.sk

I would recommend a router. A router can be used with any OS that can get a network TCP/IP connection. This is a recommended item to use. Plus you can setup NAT with it and use multiple machines with your DSL as most providers do not give out multiple public IP's. Plus a lot of the newer routers have great firewall software. It will save you time and a possible headache as not many DSL modems are kernel 2.6 compatible. Brad Dameron SeaTab Software www.seatab.com

Is this true? Are you implying that kernel has been written in such a way that if I upgrade from SuSE 9.1 to 9.2 I will have to throw away my Netcomm Plus 4 ? It is a combination ethernet, usb, ADSL modem with router and firwall, so I don't feel very happy if SuSE has done such a 'silly' thing!

It's not a question of what suse has done, it's a question of what the manufacturers haven't done. Namely written drivers. In general, a modem you connect to with an ethernet cable will work. I don't think I've ever seen one that didn't. Modems you connect to with USB may or may not work, depending on whether there is a driver for it. If there was a driver in 2.4, odds are there will be one in 2.6, unless the driver was binary only and the manufacturer is refusing to release an update

Okay, and thanks. I didn't think that you really meant that a kernel upgrade would make my modem obsolete; it would have been a bit much. Colin

What are you talking about drivers for? The device in question is an external ADSL modem with an integrated 4port switch and router. You cable it with cat 5 cables like any other router, and you manage it with your browser. Virtually all USB stuff is working flawlessly in 9.3, not that you need USB to run this device. http://www.yak.com.au/pdf/NB1300+4_info.pdf -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

It's probably easier (and almost as cheap) to get a stand-alone ADSL router. It will run itself, and all you need to do is plug both it and your PC into a hub or switch. There are a lot of these little boxes about nowadays - the last one I got for someone was a Zoom X4 (http://www.zoom.com/products/adsl_overview.html), and that worked fine from switch-on. -- Pob hwyl / Best wishes Kevin Donnelly www.kyfieithu.co.uk - Meddalwedd Rhydd yn Gymraeg www.cymrux.org.uk - Linux Cymraeg ar un CD!

send a complaint to your ISP or your modem manufacturer. the problem with usb modems is not a linux problem,is in fact, a manufacturer problem, they don ' t provide the necesarry documentation-specs to code a driver for it.
