1) Anybody know how to prevent the mc user menu from self-starting every time mc is run? 2) Why so much garbage on the command line? Geoff

Mine doesn't do that, you must have enabled it. Options/Configuration/[ ] auto mEnus
2) Why so much garbage on the command line?
What garbage? Define, I see none. Anyway, the command line is configured in "Options/Layout" Perhaps on an xterm. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
I think the 'garbage' at command line, is due a bad configured console/terminal (The TERM variable), if you press any of the supposed functions' keys you'll got garbage instead of the function ... just check your TERM variable. Jean H//

Does not 'garbage' look like: cd "`echo -e '\057\150\157\155\145\057\141\154\141\151\156" There must some subtleties in MC config to get rid of that 'garbage'. -- Alain Barthélemy cassandre@bartydeux.be http://www.bartydeux.be Linux User #315631

I tried following that one on my 8.1 system. The only thing I can do since is CAD. I never get a prompt after logging in.

That appears to be no help to me, seems to be for a newer version than 8.1. -- "I place economy among the first and most important of republican virtues, and public debt as the greatest of the dangers to be feared." Ah, I see. Yes, that "garbage" appears if you don't use a real text console. I don't know how to clear that.
I got rid of the menu problem by deleting ~/.kde/share/config/ konsolerc.
But that is not the 'mc user menu' you asked about, that is kde's konsole menu. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
Thanks to this list I've got rid of my problems - I only hope I remember the cure after the next upgrade. 1. The User menu popped up because I was in the habit of clicking on several items under mc configuration without consideration, in this case Auto Menus - thanks Carlos E. R. 2. The garbage on mc's command line was removed by adding the following to my ~/.bashrc: PS1='\u@\h:\w>' - Thanks to James Oakley and this link: http://lists.suse.com/archive/ suse-linux-e/2003-Jun/0037.html Thanks to all who responded.
