[Running SuSE 7.3 Pro DVD, updated to FTP, with all updates / kernel 2.4.18] When accessing the susehelp facility via http://localhost/susehelp/ (as opposed to using the KDE version - I'm running GNOME), several of the links are broken and I can't, for the life of me, figure out where the source that contains the affected links is stored. [sigh]. And I've looked for several hours now ... Can't find anything relevant in the SDB either. :( Most of the other links work OK (I'll deal with the others that don't work later - they are not as big a deal for me now ...). The links in question are: Under "Packages / programs": "Gimp user manual" - error is: "The requested URL /gimp/1.2/help/C/contents.html was not found on this server." Under "Installation / hardware": "SuSE Reference" - error is: "The requested URL /doc/suse/suselinux-reference_en/html/index.html was not found on this server." Under "Configuration": "SuSE Network" - error is: "The requested URL /doc/suse/network_en/html/index.html was not found on this server." "Gnome documentation" - error is: "The requested URL /opt/gnome/share/gnome/help/users-guide/C/index.html was not found on this server." Under "Commands / functions": "PostgreSQL" - error is: "The requested URL /doc/packages/postgresql/index.html was not found on this server." The following relevant help pkgs are installed: susehelp-2001.09.06-110 susehelp_en-2001.09.06-110 Interestingly, there are 12 files that are included in BOTH packages! /etc/susehelp.d/apache_en.conf /etc/susehelp.d/applbook_en.conf /etc/susehelp.d/confbook_en.conf /etc/susehelp.d/doc2_en.conf /etc/susehelp.d/howto_en.conf /etc/susehelp.d/kde_en.conf /etc/susehelp.d/kdeappl_en.conf /etc/susehelp.d/man_en.conf /etc/susehelp.d/netbook_en.conf /etc/susehelp.d/pac_en.conf /etc/susehelp.d/refbook_en.conf /etc/susehelp.d/sdb_en.conf Unfortunately, neither the package descriptions nor the incuded README file help to disambiguate why these files are in both pkgs or what the relationship between the pkgs in in the first place (they have identical comments, though their contents differ significantly). Also, I've looked (though not exhaustively) at various config and html files in the following places without success [so far]: /etc/httpd/ /usr/local/httpd/htdocs/ /etc/susehelp.d/ /usr/share/doc/susehilf/ /usr/share/doc/suse/ I don't expect the needed info to be hard-coded into the CGI files, so I haven't looked there. Any ideas, anyone? I'd like to keep my hair ... Thanks! Phil

I never had much luck with susehelp in any version. It was always clunky and semi-broken. Go directly to the package docs, most of which are in /usr/share/doc/package/<package-name>, or the howtos in /usr/share/doc/howto. The strange susehelp/apache/htdig mix is thankfully gone in 8.0. It actually came in quite handy for me when I was first working with SuSE. Yeah, it had some bugs, but usually it helped me find what I needed. Esp. considering how much documentation is available that worked with it... and I had installed *everything* back then for experimentation.

Still on 7.3, and probably will wait for 8.1 since I've gotten the 2.4.18 kernel and KDE3 working (as good as KDE3 will work). But ??? Did they include *anything* as a semi-replacement for Susehelp in 8.0? Something like that, with the minor bugs worked out, would be a great asset for newbies. And when it comes to helping newbies out, is an area I think the other distros were lacking in. :-) Joe --------------------------------------------------- The surgeon general has determined that using Microsoft products may be hazardous to your wallet. Actually, I spoke too soon. The help icon is not on the desktop but is there in kicker. It appears to be slightly improved from 7.3 and lets you index many help references when you first set it up. SuSE Help Center is alive and well. Sorry about the miscue. Best Regards, Keith -- LPIC-2, MCSE, N+ Got spam? Get spastic http://spastic.sourceforge.net
Hi all, Here I am, with my all new installed 8.0, and I can't seem to be able to register it at http://support.suse.de/en/register/ I enter my Support Key at the first screen, get transported to the second screen where I fill in everything. Upon hitting Unlock at the bottom, I get another page, which is in German and seems to say that I haven't entered any Support Key (I haven't studied German for 25 years, so I'm a bit rusty) and presents the whole address screen again, but in German this time... Is there a know problem with registration or did I enter my info at the wrong page ? -- Anders Jarnberg in Stockholm, Sweden running SuSe 8.0

I got the same thing when I put the zip code as XXX XX (with the space). Entering the zip code as XXXXX instead made it work. Try it //Anders
