Certificate setup for Apache and SSL - help needed.
Hello; I am needing to get some certificates setup. I am testing apache and ssl together. I am in need of instructions to setting up CA certificates and server certificates. Any help would be very much appreicated. Thanks. -- Kirk Moore Network/Software Engineer Moore Webs Hosting. Black holes are created when God divides by zero!

Which version of SuSE? Because instructions on setting up a test
certificate is included.
Section from /etc/sysconfig/apache/ on SuSE 8.1:
# enable the SSL module (yes|no)
#
# NOTE: before you can enable this module, you need a server
certificate.
# A test certificate can be created by entering
# 'cd /usr/share/doc/packages/mod_ssl; ./certificate.sh' as root.
# Also, you need to set the ServerName inside the <VirtualHost
_default_:443>
# block to the fully qualified domain name
# (see $FQHOSTNAME in /etc/sysconfig/network/config).
#
# if your server certificate is protected by a passphrase you should
increase the
# HTTPD_START_TIMEOUT (see above)
#
HTTPD_SEC_MOD_SSL=yes
Oh, don't forget the password with which you setup the certificates as
it could prevent apache from starting.

I am running SuSE 7.3 - and this has been an all day adventure.....

From what I remember, you need to create two certificates and those
programs are kinda spread out. Sorry that I am not able to beof more help as it was over a year ago since I did that on SuSE 7.3 :(. Not that this is any comfort right now, but SuSE 8.1 made this much simpler (thank the Lord for that!). Matt

Kirk, There are two parts to what you have asked: (1) Creating certificates and possibly signing them yourself or having a CA do that and adding the certificates to the server and client and (2) Making appropriate changes to httpd.conf so apache finds everything it needs for an SSL connection. I can help you with both; if you are still looking for a solution, drop me a line and I will send you the detailed instructions. Ali. Hi,
I couldn't resist replying on this one ;)
Is it possible you could send me the detail s in CC too?
I am quite interested on this subject as I want to start experimenting with
SSL but have no clue what so ever how to create the certificates and set up
the connection the right way ....
Thank in advance
Chris FitzGerald

Go to /usr/share/doc/packages/mod_ssl and run the certificate.sh script. Then edit your httpd.conf file to enable the ssl server. If you are using 8.1 , you need to edit /etc/sysconfig/apache. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
