question about ACCPAC accounting Advantage series
hello, has anyone ever installed or used the ACCPAC advantage accounting application on suse server? I have a client site that's interested in buying another module (inventory). I went to the accpac website www.accpac.com It says it'll work on windows or linux, it uses pervasive sql database or microsoft sql server. (Their accpac server is in aweful shape, I'll have to migrate it to a better server eventually.) I've worked on both databases, so that's not an issue. However, a business application that runs on linux is. This is not a portal (this seems like the best setup to me, it's not client dependant). This app. is a client/server setup. What experiences or reviews has anyone had with this? Also, the client asked me about becoming an accpac vendor. I've looked into this as well. After working on apps like lawson, macola, and sap....the whole certified consultant thing doesn't really impress me. I've seen certified consultants from lawson and sap that were amazing just the same as I saw some that were really aweful! Does becoming a vendor for accpac or something similar help to bring in business? That's the only real reason I'd look into doing the whole certified vendor thing. Microsoft charges $1500 for getting their MS certified vendor status. I called several consulting firms in a few states to ask them what benefit this gave them. The result was amazing to me.....it DIDN'T bring them any business at all! They just use it for "looks". Basically, they hope it impresses potential clients enough that they'll do business with them. But they've never had a client call them up and say "I want to do business with you as an IT services provider because you are a microsoft certified vendor". If anyone has had any experiences with the suse certified vendor deal, please share with the list. We're in the process of seriously considering an investment with this. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same deal as with microsoft...but, I'm not sure - so I'm open to suggestions/experiences/etc. thanks for any advice or feedback! Oskar

We are using ACCPAC as a Windows client, but the pervasive database backend is running on 8.0. I have emailed Pervasive (who seem very Linux friendly) about possible gcc problems as I am planning soon to upgrade this machine to 8.2. No response.

SuSE is the way to go for reliability, BUT the rpms for pervasive are built for Red Hat. It's not drastically different.

The ACCPAC tech representative seemed to know the Windows version, buy IMHO knew nothing about Linux. It seems to run well for us, with Windows clients and Linux server (couldn't talk the accountants to switching to Linux YET! -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. I worked on the Linux whitepaper with them. The "runs on Linux" claim is a bit of an exageration--the clients only run in windows but the file server can be samba. There was some talk a while ago about a DB2 port (which would the full backend to run on *nix) but I haven't heard anything else about it. -- -ckm
