[opensuse] Tumbleweed switch from grub to grub2 won't start X
Having began Tumbleweed some time ago using grub, my boot config added grub2 which never appeared to work but I was satisfied with grub. Believing grub to be going the way of the dodo, I opened yast and switched to grub2. My default is to runlevel 3/text mode and grub2 arrives here quite fine, but "init 5" never arrives. It presents the green on black spiraling gecko and lock screen. I can ssh into it but cannot do anything after I get there. Either something is really working the system or no control is possible. System is i7 (12 cpu) with 36gb (yes) so while process lock is possible ... How to trouble-shoot or what to try ?? Bug report ?? tks, -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

tks,
Hi Patrick, The only method I've found which reliably delivers a working grub2 on my system is booting the install DVD in rescue mode and installing it via cli. From the post-it note in my install DVD's jewel case ... note: obviously, this needs to be adapted to match the target system's drive & partitioning scheme. In this example, '/boot/' resides in the '/' partition, which is sda2: boot to rescue mode, log in as 'root' (no password needed) # mount /dev/sda2 /mnt # mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev # chroot /mnt # mount /proc # mount /sys # grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg # grub2-install /dev/sda # exit * # umount /mnt/dev * # umount /mnt/proc * # umount /mnt/sys * # umount /mnt * # eject /dev/sr0 * # poweroff * I believe I was still fine-tuning these last six lines, struggling to get a clean umount, eject and 'reboot' wasn't working for some reason. YMMV, of course. Good luck & Happy New Year! Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
