Has anyone got a beta1 loaded on a dual boot machine (windowsXP and SuSE beta1)? I've tried it and it will not boot (or reboot) into windows. In order to use windows, I boot up with a windows98 bootable floppy and then do an fdisk /mbr. This allows me to boot into windows but when I want to return to linux, I have to put the CD in and repair the boot loader, writing it in the master boot record. The default setting is to write it in the /dev/hdb1 partition but this does not work. My computer has two hard disks /dev/hda which has windows XP and /dev/hdb which contains SuSE. I'm wondering if this problem is peculiar to my machine and set up or has anyone else noticed this problem? Should I submit a bug report? Thanks Eddie

IIRC this bug has already been identified and solved with beta 2. (I deleted the thread from my local folder so can't point you to it. You can search for it, however.) -- Shriramana Sharma http://samvit.org (o- Penguin #395953 //\ running on ancient Indian wisdom V_/_ and modern computing efficiency

No, you shouldnt. You should better read documentations or use google. Maybe you will read "http://forums.techguy.org/history/t-368222.html", which is the second hit on "http://www.google.com/search?q=suse+grub+windows" Regards, Jan. -- -----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK----- Version: 3.12 GIT d-- s+: a-- C+++ UL++++ P+ L+++ E- W+++ N+++ o++ K++ w--- O M-- V- PS PE Y++ PGP++ t-- 5 X R tv- b+ DI- D++ G++ e++ h-- r+++ y+++ ------END GEEK CODE BLOCK------
Here are some tutorials I wrote for this subject: http://www.antionline.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=260811 And for securing SUSE with a minimal yet somewht effective security standard: http://www.antionline.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=260361 I wrote both and give permission to print them if you wish, just don' take credit The security one got me published on Enterprise IT Planet :) -Allen. If you need more tutorials that are easy to follow like that one let me know, I've written for Free BSD, Slackware, Debian, SUSE, and a lot of others, and I do requests.

Hello. I've just visited these links and though I've not read them fully, have a hunch they'll be good. I found a way to see your tutorial alone, without all the extraneous images and other people's posts? Just clicking the print icon among the headers of your article does it. (Others may need it. I did.)

That's really nice of you! I'll think a bit and get back to you.

I've had this problem too. Assumed that you have Windows installed in the first partition of /dev/hda and grub is installed in the MBR of /dev/hda, here comes my solution: If you are running SUSE, switch to root and load the file /boot/grub/menu.lst into an editor of your choice. In this file search for the following entry: ###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: windows### title Windows chainloader (hd0,0)/dev/hda1 Now change this entry into this: ###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: windows### title Windows root (hd0,0) makeactive chainloader +1 Next time your windows should come up without problems. You could do this also with Yast, but its a lot of mouseclicks and its not easyer. regards, Jens
