personally i don't like it, it's very annoying

PPS - Nobody likes it! It's very, very annoying...so much so that I leave
immediately any site that "plays" at me.

Hi all.... Oh well, two out of two saying please don't and I thought it was such a great idea <G>. OK, I would "still" like to have the music there for my readers. Which do you all think is better. A button stopping the music or a button starting the music? BTW what is a "valid (x)html declaration"? Also where can I find on the 'net a listing of all the differnet HTML commands? Or perhaps an online book about HTML? I would like to find something with examples of using things like "marquee", and / or how do I put stuff on the bottom bar of the NS browser. Thanks JIM On Friday 14 November 2003 18:32, mwafkowski wrote:

A button to start it.

Install quanta (from the CD's) - it has excellent help and HTML documentation.

That's a Javascript function, I think, not HTML. Dylan -- Sweet moderation Heart of this nation Desert us not We are between the wars - Billy Bragg

A choice to start the music please. Having it on by default still takes too much Internet bandwidth to get to the point your surfers can choose to stop it. If this was an internal network ONLY, then the options should be different since it is your bandwidth. Thanks for asking! Stan

The only site that has crashed opera for me in recent times is one that automatically played a music file. I didn't bother debugging any further, just stopped going to the site. If you want to keep your site traffic to a minimum then adding music could be a useful strategy. - -- dh Don't shop at GoogleGear.com! -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.1 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE/tsiHBwgxlylUsJARAv7UAJ97capjTE9hHD5ynsCptGaS6pkBSwCgiWBt x22lzJce2Iih1CxMoFIvo1g= =UxO/ -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

For online documents about HTML have a look at http://werbach.com/web/wwwhelp.html#guides And if you can understand German: there's the 'selfhtml' package that has been on the SUSE CDs for years. A very comprehensive guide to HTML comparable to a 1500 page book, where the answers to all these questions can be found.
I would like to find something with examples of using things like "marquee", and / or how do I put stuff on the bottom bar of the NS browser.
According to the selfhtml guide, 'marquee' is not part of the HTML standard and is only interpreted by MSIE. However, I tried their example with Mozilla 1.5, and it appears to be working. But there are alternatives: Dynamic HTML and Java. You can have a look at the Java example in selfhtml. S.H.

Well, I usually already have music on while browsing the web. unless your music adds added value (a tautology, I know) to the webbrowing experience, and can be made an integral part of the website, I would strongly recommened against doing it. Especially since midi sounds like crap on the el-cheape AC97/SB16 clone cards most people have in their PCs .. and if they have the really expensive ones, they usually are already using ti to play their music ... Such things also choke if your using a system ( library, university)
without sound cards.
Simply put a start page and have two buttons full multimedia and
soundless. Have a flag set and using hidden frames build a site
accordingly using dynamic methods.

NO NO NO If you want to do that (and I think it's the best way) then you should use server-side scripting, or pass the flag from page to page (maybe in a cookie [yuk]) and use javascript [yuk again]. Frames will break on text only browsers - especially those intended for blind users like screen readers and braille displays. The web is a visual medium and very few people program for text browsers
its not even taught in school.
Your way is HTML 3.2; mine is HTML 4+ the standard.

Mine is also HTML 4+. I am not advocating text-only sites, but web site designers _should_ consider the needs of users who have different access requirements. The simple use of common sense is all that is required. £0.02 Dylan p.s. It might be better to let the webmaster know he should detect opera and
add special handling.
