Installing kernel 2.4 from scratch, few questions
Do I need to upgrade mod-utils? If so, I have the latest, 2.45-1, however, it conflicts with another package. Do I 'force' the install of the newer mod-utils package? Second, I just retrieved kernel-2.4.4 from ftp.kernel.org, is this the kernel I want to use for SuSE 7.0? Thanks, CC

Yes
and only the one from Suse.

Hm... I installed 2.4.4 successfully from ftp.kernel.org without any problems, including their mod-utils. What sort of problems should I anticipate for doing this? I wanted to upgrade as soon as possible because 2.4.4 has the fix for the VIA Southbridge bug on Athlon mobos. Regards, Lew Wolfgang On Wed, 2 May 2001, Brooklyn Linux Solutions CEO wrote:

None -- it's fine. -- Mads Martin Joergensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort." -- A. P. J.

Apparently VIA posted a workaround on their web site. I say apparently because I could never find it myself. The Alan Cox (ac) kernels have had the workaround for a couple of weeks, but I could never get them to work correctly. 2.4.4 claims to have the fix installed and boot.msg contains: <6>Applying VIA PCI latency patch. So, can I safely use mod-utils from SuSE (doing the force install since it conflicts with another package) and use the kernel src from kernel.org (2.4.4)? Thanks, CC

Actually, I don't know. I used the latest mod-utils from kernel.org and compiled from source. My rpm-data-base-thingie is probably hopelessly corrupt now, but I don't care. The system seems to be stable, but time will tell..... Regards, Lew Wolfgang
