I get a kernel panic while booting my SuSE 8.1 with kernel 2.4.19.
After having compiled the kernel I get the following messages when booting
without distinction the older kernel and the new one too.
Instead I can boot the box using the CD and choosing manual install, then
loading ips.o and aic7xxx.o modules and finally choosing start installed OS.
I use hardware RAID and LVM with reiser on a NetFinity.
These are the messages:
VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem)
Loading module ips
Using /lib/modules/2.4.19-4GB/kernel/drivers/SCSI/ips.o
(ips0) unable to read config from controller
/lib/modules/2.4.19-4GB/kernel/drivers/SCSI/ips.o:
init module: no such device
Loading module aic7xxx
Using /lib/modules/2.4.19-4GB/kernel/drivers/scsi/aic7xxx/aic7xxx.o
scsi1: Adaptec AIC7XXX EISA/VLB/PCI SCSI HBA DRIVER, Rev 6.2.8

VFS: Cannot open root device "sdg1" or 08:61 Are you really booting from sdG1 ?? Using /lib/modules/2.4.19-4GB/kernel/drivers/SCSI/ips.o (ips0) unable to read config from controller /lib/modules/2.4.19-4GB/kernel/drivers/SCSI/ips.o: I am not familiar with ips.o , but it does not get along well with your hardware. On both controllers there should be diagnostic with regards to the devices. None of your scsi devices get initialized and so ---> kernel panic. Are you sure you are using the right driver(s) ?

Did you make an initrd and reference it in your boot loader? If you're booting off a SCSI device, and you haven't put the adapter driver (and the filesystem driver) in the kernel, you need an initrd. This is basic, so maybe I'm insulting you for suggesting it, but it's easy to forget. Regards, dk
Hi all,
I would like to submit once more the same problem after answering Dan and
David:
1) I have an initrd and that it is referenced in GRUB:
title linux
kernel (hd6,0)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sdg1 apic vga=771
initrd (hd6,0)/boot/initrd
2) The root partition is on sdg1 and I need both ips.o, reiserfs.o and
aic7xxx.o
This is the text I wrote on Wed 16 April 2003 14:23:
