Dear All I am trying to rip & encode a cd. Grip will not see either of my drives (DVD or CDRecorder) while KAudioCreator does. I have a fresh install of SuSE 9.0 with all available updates. The only changes made are that i have downlaoded lame from Packman. My media directory contains: cdrecorder cdrom dvd floppy KAudioCreator is set to use /dev/cdrom and this works fine (ie it sees the drive but is really, really slow to rip and encode). Grip will not see anything if the Config -> CDRom device is set to /dev/cdrom. Any pointers gratefully recieved, Tim

It sounds like you are using ide-scsi. The device to use for ripping is /dev/sgx, wheres x is the device number. For example, if your dvdrw/cdrw is at /dev/sr0, then the device for ripping is /dev/sg0. Charles -- Linux: Because a PC is a terrible thing to waste. Charles How do i tell? Also KAudioCreator sees the CDs fine using /dev/cdrom. Tim

How do i tell?
What does the command "ls -l /dev/cdrom" report?

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2004-02-22 18:44 /dev/cdrom -> hdc
If you are using ide-scsi, this should be your dvdrom. Your cdrecorder is mostly likely /dev/sr0 and /dev/sg0. Have you check that your configuration in grip is pointing it to either /dev/cdrom (dvdrom) or /dev/sg0 (CDRW)? Charles -- "How should I know if it works? That's what beta testers are for. My guess is that kaudiocreator is set to use resmgr while grip isn't. If you look in /var/log/messages while using kaudiocreator I'll bet you see lines with "resmgr" on them, while when you run grip you don't. If that's the case, the solution would be to make sure you have enough permissions on /dev/hdc, try "chmod 666 /dev/hdc", then try grip again

Anders Yes looks like KAudioCreator is using resmgr. Changed permissions but grip still not showing track list. When i manually cd into /media/cdrom from Konsole nothing shows up either. Do i have to manually mount the cd or should this happen automagically? Tim

No no, audio CDs aren't mounted, they're read directly from the device. I see from a previous mail that you know grip really is looking at the correct device, so I'm not sure Silly question, please don't be offended, but have you clicked the "toggle track display" in the lower button row, second from the right?
