dpi problems - formerly teeny tiny fonts
Hello SuSE gurus, Installed 9.2 on a new system (amd-64) Install was flawless. Never happier, fast !! Did all Yast updates However, having trouble with several gnome based (gtk) apps. ie: Firefox,Gimp. NVU, and GQview having teeny tiny fonts that are almost unreadable. The problem is dpi vs. screen resolution which is obviously incorrect. I am speaking of the app menus, dropdown boxes, URL bar etc. I run a 20" Viewsonic monitor which shows via xdpyinfo as 375x282 mm but shows dpi of 54. Should be about 96 dpi. Have tried all of the options in http://www.mozilla.org/unix/dpi.html which don't work except for Firefox where I can force the dpi option. That still leaves me with NVU, Gimp, and GQview with the "teeny tiny fonts" Almost 2 years ago I had the same problem in 8.2. Ben Rosenberg told me about gnomecc which fixed the global problem. Seems that is no longer true with 9.2. there is no gnomecc or equivalent. Is that now gconf-editor?, which I can't get to run? (Maybe not enough Gnome stuff installed) Anyway, need big-time help from the guru's on this list. I cannot see the menus, dropdown boxes etc. on the gtk apps. What must I do to change the dpi to the proper number and get the app menus to be readable??? I know, very confusing. So many different things. Specific questions which I have not explained will be gladly answered. Bob S
I'm know specialist in this area, but... Why are you looking for a change to gnome when you seam to have an XWindows problem? The DPI setting of your screen, can be changed via YAST2. Have you tried changing the setting there? JErry On Sunday 12 December 2004 08:49, B. Stia wrote:

JErry Jerry,
Thanks for replying. Am looking at them because they are the only ones affected. I also had this problem back in 8.0 or 8.1 and it was corrected by using gnonecc. I have looked at Yast until my eyes got blurry. All and every option I could find for the monitor and the videocard. Never found anything about a dpi setting. I know that it is incorrect. A change there would fix my problems with these apps. Please be so kind as to tell me exactly where to look. Thanks, Bob S.

Go to Yast>Hardware>Graphics Card and Monitor>Change>Expand Desktop>Monitor>Properties>Expert Tab>Display Size in [ mm ]. Use a ruler to fill in the x and y sizes in mm, then finish... -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Registered Linux user 231871

I hope this is applicable. I run SuSE 9.1 with Gnome 2.8 (some parts are 2.6) from usr-local-bin.com, installed through apt-get from repositories containing suser-jogley and usr-local-bin. I took some tweaking, but it now works beautifully. For overall fonts, go to /etc/X11/XF86Config or xorg.conf (if there is one there). In font paths, for any font that has 75 dpi and 100 dpi fonts, change the order so that X reads the 100 dpi fonts first , as it loads. Personally, any font with these choices, I moved to the top of the list, followed by msfonts and msfonts-style. This makes the 100 dpi fonts the default for all X. Next, for gnome, go to start-here:. But, it may not work--they change their default behavior. Instead I use run application "nautilus --browser" and put "preferences:///" in the url locater. Go to fonts. I changed them all to Verdana 10 or 12, depending on its use. Since I have a 19" LCD, I set "Font Rendering" to "Subpixel Smoothing (LCDs)". If all this doesn't help, you may have some sort of installation problem. Ed Harrison SuSE 9.1, Kernel 2.6.9-vanilla PolarBar Mailer 1.25a

My guess is that X does not pick up the physical dimensions of your monitor, and you need to supply them manually. You could try this: 1. As root, edit /etc/X11/XF86Config or /etc/X11/xorg.conf 2. Locate Section "monitor" 3. In that section, put an 'DisplaySize' entry. Mine is: DisplaySize 360 270 where 360 is the width, and 270 is the height, both in millimeters. Look in the manual of your monitor, or take a ruler and measure the screen dimensions. 4. Save the file and restart X Cheers, Leen

Try reading Stia's post you quoted. There's a URL in there that explains just that and a lot more, which he tried. -- "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. I wonder if the info there isn't leading B. Stia into peripheral projects instead of to a direct solution? In 9.2, aren't the display adapter, monitor, mouse & keyboard settings all still conveniently (and holistically) managed with SaX2.? For these types of problems in SuSE, I've always gone to run level 3 and invoked SaX2 in "low res" mode (generic 640x480 PC VGA) with the command "sax2 -l" (lower case L.) This gets me to all the tools and help in a full graphical SaX2 and avoids the dreaded "black screen of death." Once there, I select and adjust (or define) my hardware and SaX2 makes the problems short-lived. Of course, a successful outcome is dependent on supported hardware ("new system" is pretty vague.) Just my two cents and YMMV... regards, - Carl
