[SLE] File sharing linux-linux?
I've just installed SuSE 6.3 on my laptop(MS free now)
and I have no idea how to do file sharing between two
linux machines.
What do I need to do this? I know with samba I could
mount a win drive and copy stuff back and forth.
Would someone kindly point me to some information on
this.
I don't know where to begin. What packages/commands
etc.
Thanks.

You can do it two ways, with the software version of NFS (see networking section for packages) or kernel version of NFS (requires a compile of kernel) as well as some necessary file contained in a package in the networking section. I would suggest the software version so you can play around and figure out how things work, then when comfortable start plaaying around with the kernel version which takes some time getting it to work correctly. Also do a search of the SuSE database and the rest of the web for NFS and you'll find some additional information that may help you. bj> Thanks. bj> -- S.Toms - tomas@primenet.com - www.primenet.com/~tomas SuSE Linux v6.3+ - Kernel 2.2.14 -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Thanks. This is what I thought but was not sure.

You've two (possibly more) options. Firstly, you could install samba on both of the computers and smb mount them and share files the Windows way. Bleaugh! (Especially since you're getting somewhere with respect to getting rid of Windows...). Secondly, you can export then via NFS. This involves setting up both computers as NFS servers and creating a suitable /etc/exports. For more info on what goes in /etc/exports, see 'man exports'. Don't forget to do an 'rcnfsserver restart' after changing /etc/exports, so that your changes will take effect. Hope that helps, Chris -- Apologies to everyone who has been waiting for replies off me over the past few weeks - I've been away from my computer. I'll try to catch up with my email over the coming days, but don't be surprised if you get a reply in a month's time... __ _ -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Chris Reeves /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ICQ# 22219005 _\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
