Slow Internet Connection
Dear all, I have a SuSE8.1 fully patched box which connects to the internet via Modem (serial US Sportster 56Kbps) and shares it's connection through masquerading to 3 other Win9X PCs. Lately the connection is barely making it causing a lot of hangups to the phone line and it is extremely slow. I want to examine the case better and see if it is the ISPs fault or the Linux's Box fault that the connection is soooooo slow... Can someone please give me some guidelines, tests or recommendations on what to do in order to come around this?? I am currently using Shorewall for my firewall and it works just fine on another box that I have used it so far (difference is that the other box connects to the internet via ISDN modem). Thanks in advance for your help!! Chris

Well if its slow from the linux box even when the others are turned off it might be any on the normal telephone line problems, crappy lines, bad connectors, etc. Tail your logs while the other machines are off to see whats going on, and run something like kppp or gkrellm that can measure utilization on the interface. But first... Check those windows boxen for worms ;-) -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

I would check for noise on the line. Some modems can issue a report on line perfomance after each connection (ATI3I6). From an old log (not internet):
04 Nov 14:10:41.94 BINK sending "ATI3I6|" to modem 04 Nov 14:10:42.12 BINK 'ATI3I6' 'U.S. Robotics 56K FAX EXT Rev. 11.6.11' 'U.S. Robotics 56K FAX EXT Link Diagnostics...' 'Chars sent 3177 Chars Received 'Chars lost 0' 'Octets sent 3177 Octets Received 'Blocks sent 72 Blocks Received 'Blocks resent 0' 'Retrains Requested 0 Retrains Granted 'Line Reversals 0 Blers 'Link Timeouts 0 Link Naks 'Data Compression NONE' 'Equalisation Long' 'Fallback Enabled' 'Protocol LAPM' 'Speed 31200/28800 ' 'Last Call 00:00:10' 'Disconnect Reason is DTR dropped'
