[opensuse] Re: On suse being difficult ...
After reading the many posts on this thread I see that I have been extremely fortunate with my results. Although I am a Linux "expert" according to some obscure ranking website I do not believe that my skills ever came into play when I installed Suse on the aforesaid machines. It was stick in the DVD, answer a few very basic questions and PRESTO! The Suse install was as slick as anything I have ever installed, took much less time to install than any Windows system I have done (Win 7 is good but it ain't that good). As for Apple, since their inception (and my experience with them goes back to the days I was importing Taiwanese Apple II+ clones in 1979) they have required very specific hardware, to the point of being somewhat ridiculous but it was the thing which guaranteed box-to-box uniformity and the expectation of trouble-free installs. As someone else said, the great variety (chaos) of hardware for the PC platform makes a Linux install challenging and, I suppose, it can be a bit of a crapshoot. Couple that with the somewhat out-of-touch design philosophy (like, what ever happened to focus groups and peer review BEFORE implementation?) and you definitely can have issues. My point, though, was that the people who I assisted had no such issues and they were quite happy with their results. What I take away from that is that Linux is not just for the experienced user any more.
