[opensuse] Updates
I have tried to configure updates and am not having success. I have never had this problem with Suse before. I have registered the purchase with Novell, tried configuring KDE_Updater_Applet and all to no avail. I have read the Startup manual with no benefit. Any help would be appreciated. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'd give it some time. Seems the openSUSE sites are acting up. I tried to run YaST in software management interface and it's repeatedly failing to update - complains it's unable to read from the site. My guess is it's being updated or has become kludged someway or another. Previously I had no problems with the site source. Try in the morning. You don't say which version you're using, Doc. I had the same problem with 10.1, and got everything to work by NOT registering during the setup process. Instead, run the Yast updater with the default selections, YAST will update itself, do it again, and then once more. You'll find that YAST has installed the Suse Update repository and a whole bunch of other stuff. Now go and register if you want to. Thanks Bob. I have to laugh. I am sure some people wondered if I had a clue. I assure all that I went through all the usual maneuvers multiple times, most assuredly including the online update configuration. I am running 10.2 and have been a Suse user since 5.? (and linux user since 0.99pl6 on my Amiga 3000). Anyway, this morning I ran online update configuration again and, instead of opening a browser, it told me it was adding a download source and all appears to be well. I suspect it was just a matter of my registration, done last night, "taking". What I am seeing is a mirror that worked well for a week suddenly stops working with dependency check errors or other things. I have then gone to YaST and had it just find another mirror and everything will start working again. I think the error message reporting when it doesn't work is very very poor and doesn't really tell the poor user much of anything. I think this system needs a lot more user friendly reporting and flexability which may happen over time. I sure like on Ubuntu the reporting of what is happening during upgrades by contrast. Just my .02C worth or not. Cheers, Bob -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I think OpenSUSE/NOVELL should set up a round-robin mirror assignment facility that would assign the least busy mirror from a list that is checked for reachability by the novell site and also by the client trying to do an update. Rather than everybody picking a mirror and overloading it, this would load balance and assure a proper mirror. This "meta-mirror" would be a choice but not a required selection. This probably should be done without regard to location (unless the lawyers get involved again) because mirrors in Germany are usually not busy in the wee hours of the german nignt and are faster for me than mirrors 900 miles away. If this approach is good enough for NTP it seems like it should work for updates as well. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Except that YOU keeps suggesting I use sites in Germany, etc, and sometimes fails to include a single site on this side of The Pond. -- The best way to accelerate a computer running Windows is at 9.81 m/s² -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
