Now that I rebooted and again had to increase the shmmax limit, apache is refusing to start again. This is supremely annoying. Any ideas?

Thanks much. My Yast(2) doesn't appear to have the kernel options so I just modified the file directly. I suppose I need to put in the command in the local startup file now?
Thanks, Jim
Jim - Sorry, I recently upgraded to 8.2, and still had the same issue, what I told you was how I fixed it on 8.2. As you surmised, on 8.1 you can just edit the /etc/sysconfig/kernel file directly; in fact, to test it, I just logged in as root and did "echo 33554432 > /proc/sys/kernel/shmmax" then restarted Apache and all was well. It just seems to me that there was another thing I had to change on 8.1 before I got the change to stay between reboots.

Something is changing the shmmax default value. Do you have powertweak installed and is it run at startup? If yes, correct the value there, or deinstall it if you do not need it. If the value is correct and you still have problems starting apache, please provide details. Peter
