Hello I am running SUSE Linux 8.0 Pro I have a US ROBOTICS v90-92 External Fax Modem I get a "no carrier" error when using anything like KPPP, KINTERNET,.... It dials up, the schools modem answers, and says "Expecting Connect"...and then sits there and ultimatly times out. Then the message "No Carrier" This next part is important. After they updated the modem pool at school, I found the SAME ERROR in WIN 98! I could not dial in. They told me to go to COMPUTER--DIAL UP NETWORKING--right click my connection--PROPERTIES--CONNECTION--ADVANCED--EXTRA SETTING and put S 32=98 in the box. This worked. Now I am using linux and have no idea how to accomplish the same thing or a workaround. I need help with the Linux ppp protocol and NOT the windows.... I need to fix the linux box and would like some help. Thanks in advance Forrest
I am not quite sure with KPPP but you may want to try going to Setup~>Modem~>Modem Commands~>String 1-(Enter your added value S 32=98) See if that works, or if anyone has another suggestion. Good luck! RKDavies On Mon, 2002-06-10 at 00:01, Forrest Halford wrote:

I have a similar problem with a different modem. I my case it connects all the time using KPPP, but only after 4 or five attempts using Kinternet. I noticed in Kinternet also 'No Carrier'. I noticed the last string to the modem was in KPPP: ATM0L0, while in Kinternet it is: ATM1 as shown on the configuration panel under init8. How can I change init8? In YaST2, I can change init1, init2 and init3, there is no init8. Regards, Frits On Monday 10 June 2002 05:15, Phantasm wrote:

ATM0L0 is the modem volume string for off ATM1L1 is the modem volume string for low and M2L2 is high.. I am not sure where in YAsT2 you can modify init8 but check for a volume setting in there. I am not really familiar with modems, as I just started using one after 2-3 years these past 4 months. You may wanna look for a modem time out setting to pause the wait for a carrier? Wish I knew more to suggest RKDavies On Mon, 2002-06-10 at 17:30, Frits Wuthrich wrote:

I found a button in YaST2 to turn the volume of, but it doesn't address the connection problem I have using Kinternet. KPPP works fine all the time, I don't know why? Any suggestions? Frits On Monday 10 June 2002 22:47, Phantasm wrote:

Have you got the Dial on Demandcheckbox ticked? When I enable this checkbox my KInternet also stops working. Unselecting it make KInternet work for me. HTH Mark A -- Mark Annandale SuSE Linux 8.0 Pro. KMail 1.4.1 KDE 3.0.1 -- ' No Microsoft products were used in the compilation of this document.'

You are not going to believe this: I had it unchecked. Now that I have checked it, all of a sudden it works! At least the last two times, I need to get a bit more exprience, but this seems to work now! Still there is an isuue: it should also work without this box unchecked.
